Making a Qiraat Mistake in Salah After 3 Verses

Question:

After reciting three verses in the morning prayer, the Imam recited, وَضَرَبَ اللَّـهُ مَثَلًا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا امْرَأَةَ فِرْعَوْنَ. Instead of آمَنُوا امْرَأَةَ فِرْعَوْنَ, he read كَفَرُوْا امْرَأَةَ فِرْعَوْنَ. So, was the morning prayer valid or not? If it wasn’t, is it wajib to repeat the prayer or not?

باسمه سبحانه وتعالى

Answer: وبالله التوفيق

By reciting, كَفَرُوْا امْرَأَةَ instead of  لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا امْرَأَة the meaning changed totally. Therefore, in this case the salah became invalid (faasid). Repeating it is necessary. Whichever salah becomes faasid (invalid) by making a drastic mistake in the recitation, the ruling does not change whether one recited three verses or not. Thus, if a drastic mistake occurs after reciting three verses correctly, even then the salah will become invalid (faasid).

فإن كان يغير المعنى تفسد صلاته بلا خلاف نحو إن قرأ: “والذين آمنوا وكفروا بالله ورسوله أولئك هم الصديقون‘‘. (الفتاوی التاتارخانیة ۱۰۲/ ۲ رقم: ۱۸٦۲  زکریا)

أما إذا غير المعنى بأن قرأ إن الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات أولئك هم شر البرية – إلى قوله – خالدين فيها أولئك هم خير البرية تفسد عند عامة علمائنا وهو الصحيح. (الفتاوى الهندية 1:81)

وإن تغير المعنى بأن قرأ: “ان الابرار لفى  جحيم و إن الفجار لفى نعيم” أو قرأ: “إن الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات أولئك هم شر البرية،

 أو قرأ: “وجوه يومئذ عليها غبره، أولئك هم المؤمنون حقا تفسد صلاته؛ لأنه أخبر بـخلاف ما أخبر الـله تعالى به، وقال بعضهم: لا تفسد

صلاته لعموم البلوى، والأول أصح. (فتاوى قاضي خان على الفتاوى الهندية 1:152)

  1. assalamu alhkum…if imaam read by mistake in salah ” wa lakad KHALAQNA instead of AHLAKNA” . (Surae qamar) Sarah has tò be repeated? ?

      Wa alaikumus Salam
      The principle regarding this issue according to Imam Muhammad (رحمه الله) is that any mistake in recitation which causes the meaning of the verse to change drastically, causes the Salah to break. If it does not change drastically, the Salah will not break in all situations, whether the altered word is present in the Quran or not. [Al-Isbaah ala Nuril Idhaah Pg.238-241]
      Mufti Shabbir Ahmed Qasmi defines drastic change as a total mix-up of Imaan and Kufr; Jannah and Jahannam; sin and reward etc. [Fatawa Qasmiyah Vol.7 Pg.279]
      The correct method of recital for the verse under question is:
      وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَا أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ ﴿٥١﴾
      “We have destroyed your likes. So is there any who will take heed? (51)” {Qamar}
      Allamah Jalaalud Deen Suyuti (رحمه الله) states, “(We have destroyed your likes) i.e. past nations who were similar to you in disbelief (So is there any who will take heed)? This is a rhetorical question in the meaning of a command i.e. ponder and take heed!”
      By the Imam saying Khalqnaa خلقنا, he altered the translation to, “We have created your likes. So is there any who will take heed.”
      Even though the intended meaning of the verse is slightly changed, this translation does not necessitate kufr or drastic change in the theme of the Quran. Rather, in many verses Allah Ta’ala has instructed us to ponder and take heed over our blessings including our creation itself. For instance, Allah says, “There are many Signs on earth for those of sure faith, (20) and also in your own selves. Do you not see? (21).” {Dhariyaat}
      Therefore, it would not be necessary to repeat the Salah.
