The great jurist Allamah Ibnul Haaj (رحمه الله) said: “Our scholars have stated that, if a person takes a glass and drinks from it with the imagination that it is alcohol, then that water is haram on him.”

The last of the research scholars, Allamah Shami (رحمه الله) states: “If a person drinks water or any other permissible beverage, along with entertainment and music, in the manner of the fussaaq (immoral), then this is haram.” He adds, the author of ‘Tabyinul Maharim’ also concurs with this.

Allamah Nahlawi (رحمه الله) states: “It is prohibited (haram) to drink water in the manner in which alcohol is drank.”

In our days, one of the manners of drinking alcohol is in a wine glasses. Therefore, drinking non-alcoholic wines or even water in them will be counted as emulating the style of drinking wine. If one makes a toast, then this would add to the reprehensibility.

وقال ابن الحاج المالكي إنه يحرم لأنه نوع من الزنا كما قال علماؤنا فيمن أخذ كوزا يشرب منه فتصور بين عينيه أنه خمر فشربه أن ذلك الماء يصير حراما عليه اه

 والأقرب لقواعد مذهبنا عدم الحل لأن تصور تلك الأجنبية بين يديه يطؤها فيه تصوير مباشرة المعصية على هيئتها فهو نظير مسألة الشرب ثم رأيت صاحب تبيين المحارم من علمائنا نقل عبارة ابن الحاج المالكي وأقرها وفي آخرها حديث عنه إذا شرب العبد الماء على شبه المسكر كان ذلك عليه حراما اه
