Status of the Hadith: Were it not for you, I would not have created the universe.

Question:

Please reference the hadith: لولاك لما خلقت الأفلاك (Were it not for you, I would not have created the universe.)

Answer:

This hadith (لولاك لما خلقت الأفلاك ) is very famous but its words are not established anywhere.

In the ‘Mustadrak’ of Hakim (Vol.2 Pg.615) there is a hadith with the words:   يا ادم لولا محمد ما خلقتك  (O Adam! Were it not for Muhammad, I would not have created you), and in the ‘Mu’jam Sagheer’ of Tabrani (Vol.2 Pg.83) there is (Were it not for him, O Adam, I would not have created you).

Hakim said: “Its chain is authentic.” However, Zahabi remarked: “Rather, it is a fabrication. Abdur Rahman (ibn Zaid ibn Aslam) is extremely weak.”

In one of the narrations of Hakim, there is the hadith of Ibn Abbas: لولا محمد ما خلقت الجنة والنار (Were it not for Muhammad, I would not have created the Jannah and Fire).

He said: “Its chain is authentic.” However, Zahabi remarked: “I believe it is a fabrication.” Zahabi has also said in ‘Mizaan’: “The narration is strange and I believe its a fabrication.”

Hafiz Ibn Hajr upheld this verdict in ‘Lisaan’.

Translator’s note:

The following is a short list of our Akabir who have considered this hadith a fabrication:

  1. Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz Saheb Dehlavi in his ‘Fatawa Azizi’ [See Fatawa Mahmoodiyah (Vol.7 Pg.254)]
  2. Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi in his ‘Imdaadul Fatawa’ (Vol.5 Pg.90)
  3. Faqeehul Ummat Mufti Mahmoodul Hasan Gangohi in his Fatawa Mahmoodiyah (Vol.7 Pg.254)

However, the latter two quote Mulla Ali Qari saying the meaning is correct.
And Allah knows best.
