Question:

I am a doctor and will like to marry a female doctor with good character. However, due to the corruption of society I am frightened. There is a young female doctor that works in this hospital that seems to have good character. She is punctual in her salah and wears a scarf. At the moment I do not have any relationship with her. Will it be permissible for me, with the intention of marriage, to build a friendship with her to get to know her private condition better? So that I am at ease. Please advice me in the light of Shariah.

Answer:

In the above question the method you have mentioned is not permissible or correct in Shariah. To find out about the character and habits of a woman the best manner is to ask her female neighbors and relatives. Women are the most knowledgeable of other women’s personalities.

Since you have already seen her it is not lawful for you to keep on looking at her.

قال عليه السلام: “لا يخلون رجل بامرأة، ليس منها بسبيل، فإن الشيطان ثالثهما” وقد روي من حديث عمر، وابن عمر، وجابر بن سمرة، وعامر بن ربيعة، وليس فيه: قوله: “ليس منها بسبيل”

ولا يجوز أن ينظر الرجل إلى الأجنبية إلا إلى وجهها وكفيها فإن كان لا يأمن الشهوة لا ينظر إلى وجهها إلا لحاجة لقوله عليه الصلاة والسلام من نظر إلى محاسن امرأة أجنبية عن شهوة صب في عينيه الآنك يوم القيامة فإن خاف الشهوة لم ينظر من غير حاجة تحرزا عن المحرم وقوله لا يأمن يدل على أنه لا يباح إذا شك في الاشتهاء كما إذا علم أو كان أكبر رأيه ذلك

It is mentioned in Durr Mukhtaar (6:369):

ولا يكلم الاجنبية

(It is not permissible to speak to an ajnabiyah (non-mahram).)

It is mentioned in Majmooah Qawaaneen Ismali:

“It is haram for both of them to meet in seclusion.”
