The Reviver of Tasawwuf in the light of Quran and Sunnah, Hazrat Hakeemul Ummah Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (May Allah have mercy on him) writes:

“It is famous amongst women that the Peer (Shaikh of Tasawwuf) has a higher status than the husband and father, This is nothing but wrong. Wives! Understand that aside from the duties of Deen and laws of Shariah [1], in all other duties the husband has more rights than the Shaikh. Rather, one’s mother and father has more rights than the Shaikh.”

[1] This means if the Shaikh is advising you on practicing on the Deen, while your husband or parents are demanding you to break the laws of Allah and His Rasool, then the Shaikh’s advice is binding, due to it being according to what Allah and His Rasool commanded. The Messenger of Allah said: “There is no obedience if it involves disobedience towards Allah.” [Sahih Muslim # 1840]
