There are two objectives in using a miswak:

1. Emulating and following the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم
2. Cleansing of the mouth and teeth.

By using a toothbrush and toothpaste the second objective will be obtained, but a person will not receive the rewards of following the Sunnah.
