Shaikh Sābūnī’s Tafsīr of Sūrah Al-Mulk Verse 2

الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ

He created in this world life and death. He gives life to whom He wishes and gives death to whom He wishes and He is the All-powerful and Alone. The ʿUlamā have said: “Death is not the end and a total cutoff from life, rather it is a transfer from one world to another,” and this has been established in the Aḥādīth that the dead hear, see, and feel in the grave, as was the saying of the Prophet (ﷺ): “Surely the slave when he is placed in his grave and his friends turn away from him, he surely hears the footsteps of their sandals”. In another ḥadīth, it is mentioned: “By the being in whose hand is my soul, you are not more perceptive of speech than them (the dead), however, they do not answer.”
