Companionship of the Pious Induces Piety

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The example of a good companion and an evil companion is like that of a seller of musk (perfume) and one who blows the bellows (i.e. a blacksmith). One who sells musk may give you some, you may purchase some from him or you will at least enjoy the good fragrance by being with him. As for the one who blows the bellows, he may burn your clothes, or you will have to bear a foul smell by being with him.”[1]

The Prophet ﷺ also said, “A person is on the Deen of his friend, so carefully consider who you befriend.”[2]

Therefore, Allah commands us to sit with, accompany and associate with the pious. He says in the Quran: “O you who believe, fear Allah and be with the true ones.”[3]

Patience is required to acquire anything, including piety, so Allah commands: “And remain patiently with those who call upon their Sustainer morning and evening, seeking His countenance. And let not your eyes overlook them, seeking the adornments of this worldly life. And pay no heed to the one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follows his own lust and whose case exceeds all bounds.”[4]

May Allah allow us to regularly sit in the company of His accepted and righteous servants.
