Question:
Is it better to give the Sadaqah Fitr in Ramadhan and will it be seventy times more rewarding, or is it best to give it on the morning of Eid?
Answer: حامدا ومصليا
The purpose of giving Sadaqah Fitr on the morning of Eid is to fulfill the needs of the destitute.[1] If it is given before Eid in Ramadhan, then it would be more helpful in serving this purpose and the rewards of Ramadhan are separate.[2]
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.

Translator’s note:
[1] The Messenger of Allah said, “Enrich them on this day.” [Sunan Daarqutni Vol.3 Pg.89 #2133]
[2] Ibn Umar said that the Sahabah used to give their Sadaqah Fitr a day or two before Eid. [Sahih Bukhari #1511] Nowadays, due to the larger cities and bigger populations, getting the Sadaqah to the deserving persons before Eid is a difficult task. Therefore extra days are needed so that the less fortunate can also enjoy Eid. And Allah knows best.
