Hadith: Seeing Him Reminds You of Allah

الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله وعلى آله وصحبه، أما بعـد

  1. It was narrated from Asma bint Yazid that she heard the Messenger of Allah say: “Shall I not tell you of the best of you?” They said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “The best of you are those who, when they are seen, Allah is remembered.”

(Ibn Majah in his Sunan #4119, The Chapters On Asceticism, Chapter 4. One Who Is Paid any heed, Ahmed in Musnad Vol.6 Pg.459, Bukhari in Adabul Mufrad #323)

Allamah Busiri said: “This isnaad (chain of narration) is sound. Shahr ibn Hawshab and Suwaid ibn Saeed are mukhtalaf feehima but the remainder of the narrators are thiqaat (reliable).” [Misbahuz Zujajah]

Haithami said: “Ahmed narrated it. In it is Shahr ibn Hawshab. Many Muhadditheen have considered him reliable. And the remainder of the narrators are of the Sahih.” [Majmauz Zawaaid Vol.8 Pg.93]

  1. Ibn Abbas narrates, a man asked: “O Messenger of Allah, who are the Awliyaa of Allah?” He replied: “They are those who, when they are seen, Allah is remembered.” [Bazzar in his Musnad See Kashful Astaar #3626]

Haithami said: “Narrated by Bazzar from his shaikh Ali ibn Harb ar-Razi, but I do not know him. The remainder of the narrators have been considered reliable.” [Majmauz Zawaid Vol.10 Pg.78]

  1. Ibn Abbas narrates that the Nabi said: “{Know! The awliyaa of Allah have no fear on them nor any grief}. When they are seen Allah is remembered.”

 [Tabrani in Kabir #12325 Vol.12 Pg.13]

Haithami said: “Tabrani narrates it from his shaikh al-Fadhl ibn Abi Rawh but I do not know him. The remainder of its narrators are reliable.” [Majmauz Zawaid Vol.7 Pg.36]

  1. Amr ibnul Jamooh said, I heard the Nabi saying: “[Allah says], Surely my awliyaa (friends) from my servants and my beloved from my creation are those who are remembered when I am remembered and I am remembered when they are remembered.”

[Ahmed in Musnad Vol.24 Pg.317 Risalah]

Haithami said: “Narrated by Ahmed. In it is Rishdeen ibn Sa’ad. It is munqate’ (has a broken link) and weak.” [Majmauz Zawaid 1/89]

Allamah Sindhi explains: “Who are remembered when I am remembered’ means when people intend to remember Allah they look at these people’s methods and follow them. ‘I am remembered when they are remembered’ means that when the lifestyle of these people are mentioned people are inclined to remember Allah.” [Hashiyah Sindhi on Musnad Ahmed] In other words they are a source of inspiration and are true role-models.

  1. It is narrated by Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah was asked, who is the best companion? He replied, “The one when seen reminds you of Allah; and whose speech increases your knowledge; and whose actions reminds you of the Hereafter.”

[Adb ibn Humaid in his Musnad, see Muntakhab #630 Vol.1 Pg.482]

Hafiz Busiri said: “The narrators of this chain are reliable.” [Ithaaful Kiyarah #1/6059, Vol.5 Pg.382]

[Abu Ya’laa in his Musnad #2437]

Munziri states: “Its narrators are all of the Sahih except Mubarak ibn Hassan.” (Targheeb wa Tarheeb, pg.51 Baitul Ilm)

  1. Abdullah (ibn Masud) said, the Messenger of Allah said: “Surely from amongst the people are keys to the remembrance of Allah. When they are seen Allah is remembered.”

[Tabrani in Kabir #10476 Vol.10 Pg.253]

Haithami said: “In it is Amr ibnul Qaasim. I do not know him. The remainder of the narrators are of the Sahih.” [Majmauz Zawaaid 10/76]

  1. Ibn Masud narrates that the Sahabah asked: “Who should we sit with, O Nabi of Allah?” He replied: “, “The one when seen reminds you of Allah; and whose speech increases your actions; and whose actions reminds you of the Hereafter.”

[Ibn Shaheen in Targheeb Fee Fadhailil A’maal #482 Pg.377]

All of these narrations support one another. Therefore this hadith is sound.

And Allah knows best.
