Is it ok for a Muslim women to go outside for recreational purposes?

Allah Ta‘ālā has directed women in the Quran:

وَقَرْنَ فِي بُيُوتِكُنَّ (الأحزاب: ٣٣

“And remain in your homes”

The verse highlights that the standard for women is to remain in their homes. This directive amongst others ensures that the fabric of communal modesty remains unviolated. Habitual attendance in public causes an obvious laxation in morals. Yes, if a woman has a need to leave the home, she may do so observing the laws of hijāb.[1] In light of the immodesty and fitnah which is rife in this day and age, we advise that the following be adhered to, especially when going to public areas:

  • Hijāb must be observed, including the veil.
  • No intermingling of sexes.
  • The recreational spot must not be one of vice i.e. music, wine, etc.
  • The husband or a mahram should accompany her.

Men may go out for recreational purposes provided that the spot is not one of fitnah and vice.
