How to Protect your gaze

Hazrat Maulana Abrarul Haqq Saheb Khalifah of Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi  عليهما الرحمة writes:

The harms of a lustful glance are so much that many a times it will lead to the destruction of ones Deen and Dunyaa. Nowadays the means of falling into this spiritual malady are spreading tremendously. Here under we will mention some of its harms and methods of protecting ones gazes. In sha Allah if one adopts these methods then it will be easy to protect ones gaze.

1. Whenever there are women around make sure to lower ones gaze even if the desire to look is there.

2. If a person looks up and his sight falls on a woman he should lower his gaze right away regardless of how hard this is on his heart and regardless of if his soul will leave his body by doing such.

3. One should think that if I do not protect my gazes the nur (light) of my good deeds will be snatched from me and my aakhirah will be destroyed. There is also a possibility of being degraded in this life.

3. A person should at least perform 4 rakats of Nafil salah on every lustful glance. He should also give charity according to his means. He should make lots of istighfaar (seeking forgiveness).

4. One should ponder that lustful gazes ruin the heart and it takes a very long time for the darkness to be removed. (After casting a lustful gave) until a person does not lower his gaze for many times, when there is desire to look, his heart will not be purified.

5. Ponder that lustful gazes creates inclination, inclination creates fondness, fondness creates Ishq (love) and illicit love destroys a person’s dunya and aakhirah.

6. Ponder that lustful gazes causes the desire for good deeds, zikr and shughl to diminish until a person leaves them out. Then a hatred towards them is created.

    5) Deprives us from enjoying and concentrating in Prayers.
    6) Gives rise to constant feeling of guilt and depression.
    7) Sometimes leads to sleepless nights.
    8) Renders our heart weak for continuous Shaytanic attacks.
    9.) Promotes hypocrisy.
    10) Weakens our memory.
    11) Eventually leads to Zina (adultery).
    12) Above all, diminishes our love for and fear of Allah.
