The Origin of Music

Allah T’aalaa commands the believing women in the Quran Majeed:images
“And do not display your beauty like how it used to be displayed in the first days of ignorance.”
In explaining this verse Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) says:

The “first days of ignorance” was in the period between Nooh (عليه السلام) and Idris (عليه السلام). There was 1000 years between them. There were two tribes from the children of Adam (عليه السلام). One used to live in the mountains and the other on the plains. The male folk of the mountains were handsome while the ladies were unattractive. The women folk of the plains were beautiful while the men were unattractive. Iblis (لعنه الله ) came to a man of the plains in the form of a boy and offered his services for hire and served the man.

Iblis then made a flute like the one used by the shepherds to toot with. (Since this was the first time music was introduced) Iblis made a sound that the people never heard before. This musical sound reached the people and they all gathered around him listening to it. They organized a festival in which they came together once a year and the women beautified themselves and started to display their beauty in front of the men.

A man from the mountains happened to stumble upon them on their festival and saw the women and their beauty. So he returned to his friends and informed them about it. They all went down to the festival and joined in with the women. This lead to the beginning of immorality.

Collected by Ibn Jarir (19/99), Hakim (2/548), Baihaqi in Shuab (5068) Ibn Abi Haatim (17670) and others. Ibn Hajr states: Its sanad is strong. (Fathul Baari 8/520)

Allamah Tabri mentions in his “Tareekh” that the people of the mountains were followers of Sheeth ibn Adam (عليهما السلام) while those on the plains followed Qabil ibn Adam, the one who murdered his brother Habil ibn Adam. He also mentions that they invented other musical instruments like the drum, mandolin and lute. They were also the ones that lead the people of Sheeth (عليه السلام) astray. Iblis lured them with the music and women and they were unable to resist the temptation. These were the same people that were then destroyed in the flood of Nooh (عليه السلام).

(Tareekh Tabri 1/166-168)
Lessons:
1. Music is a mind-controlling weapon of Shaitan.
2. Men and Women become immoral after listening to music.
3. Men are lured and trapped by the indecent exposure of women.
4. Music and zina go hand in hand.
5. Partying leads to disbelief which then leads to the destruction of nations.
“It is IMPOSSIBLE to have LOVE for the QUR’AAN and LOVE for music in the same HEART.”
Ibn Al Qayyim (rahimahullah)
