Therefore, it is very important to mention the Islamic perspective of this issue for the guidance of mankind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>History of Homosexuality<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Homosexuality is not a new issue. The People of L\u016bt (Peace be on him), referred to in the Bible as Lot, were the first to initiate this vile deed that contradicted the <em>Shar\u012b<\/em><em>\u02bf<\/em><em>ah<\/em> of All\u0101h as well as the nature of man.<\/p>\n<p>Almighty All\u0101h says in the Noble Qur\u2019\u0101n <em>\u2013 <\/em>\u201c<em>We sent L\u016bt, he told his people, do you commit such a terrible act that none in the universe had ever committed before you?<\/em>\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is said that this shameful act was never committed before them by anyone nor had it crossed their minds.<\/p>\n<p>\u02bfAmr ibn Din\u0101r says that, \u201cNever did a male fulfil his desire with another male (have sexual intercourse) before the people of L\u016bt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u02bfAbdul M\u0101lik says that, if this event had not been mentioned in the Qur\u2019\u0101n, I would have never suspected that a human being could do something like that.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prophet Muhammad (May All\u0101h send blessings and peace on him) also feared that his nation would commit this shameful act. He says \u2013 \u201cThe thing that I fear most for my nation is the action of the people of L\u016bt.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Action of the People of L\u016bt (Peace be on him)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Almighty All\u0101h appointed marrying the opposite sex as a lawful method for the natural satisfaction of carnal desires. However, the menfolk of L\u016bt (Peace be on him) approached men and had sexual intercourse with them instead of women. Almighty All\u0101h says in the Glorious Qur\u2019\u0101n \u2013 <em>\u201cYou approach men with lust instead of women. No, you really are people who overstep the limits.<\/em>\u201d<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This verse is unconditional in its prohibition. It includes consensual and non-consensual sex between people of same sex. It also includes sex before and after \u201cmarriage\u201d between same sex.<\/p>\n<p>It should be understood that despite the fact that All\u0101h made it lawful for men to fulfil their sexual desires with women, he did not allow them to fulfil this desire in the women\u2019s anuses. Almighty All\u0101h says in the Noble Qur\u2019\u0101n <em>\u2013 <\/em>\u201c<em>Then go on to them from where All\u0101h has ordered you.<\/em>\u201d<a href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the next verse All\u0101h mentions the place \u2013 \u201c<em>Your wives are your tilling fields, so approach your tilling fields as you desire.<\/em>\u201d<a href=\"#_edn6\" name=\"_ednref6\">[6]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>These verses mean that it is permissible to fulfil your desire in any position as long as the husband enters the vagina only. The vagina is the only place of production and the only passage which will allow pregnancy to take place. That is why the women have been compared with tilling fields while the husband has been compared with a cultivator.<\/p>\n<p>So, the question is how would it be permissible to fulfil one\u2019s desire with a man?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Evil Action<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Homosexuality is such an action and sin that the <em>\u1e62<\/em><em>a<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>\u0101bah<\/em>, <em>T\u0101bi<\/em><em>\u02bf\u016b<\/em><em>n<\/em> and the <em>Mujtahid<\/em><em>\u016b<\/em><em>n<\/em> (May All\u0101h have mercy on them) have declared it to be far more grave than other acts of shame, because it is prohibited in <em>Shar\u012b<\/em><em>\u02bf<\/em><em>ah<\/em> and it goes against the nature and intellect of a human.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u02bf<\/em><em>All\u0101mah<\/em> Akmal writes in <em>Shar<\/em><em>\u1e25-ul-<\/em><em>Mash\u0101riq<\/em> that homosexuality is forbidden according to <em>Shar\u012b<\/em><em>\u02bf<\/em><em>ah<\/em>, intellect and human nature.<a href=\"#_edn7\" name=\"_ednref7\">[7]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Deprived of the Mercy of All\u0101h<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ibn \u02bfAbb\u0101s (May All\u0101h be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (May All\u0101h send blessings and peace on him) said, \u201cAll\u0101h will not look (with mercy) at a man who fulfils his desire with a man or with a woman from the anus.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn8\" name=\"_ednref8\">[8]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>The People of L\u016bt (Peace be on him)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because of this shameful and wicked action, in the Noble Qur\u2019\u0101n, Almighty All\u0101h refers to them as:<\/p>\n<p>(1) People who overstep the limits.<a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\">[9]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(2) Evil and Sinful people.<a href=\"#_edn10\" name=\"_ednref10\">[10]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(3) Transgressing nation. <a href=\"#_edn11\" name=\"_ednref11\">[11]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(4) A nation that behaves ignorantly.<a href=\"#_edn12\" name=\"_ednref12\">[12]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(5) A criminal nation.<a href=\"#_edn13\" name=\"_ednref13\">[13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(6) Its inhabitants are certainly oppressors. <a href=\"#_edn14\" name=\"_ednref14\">[14]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>The City of the People of L\u016bt\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>\u00a0(Peace be on him)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Historians have recorded the names of the four towns to which L\u016bt was sent as Sad\u016bm (Sodom), Am\u016brah (Ghamorrah), \u02bf\u0100m\u016brah and \u1e62abw\u012br. The largest of these was Sad\u016bm where L\u016bt resided. It was situated close to the Jordan river. After Jibra\u2019\u012bl (Peace be on him) overturned the town, the Dead Sea formed at its location and is existing to this day. The Dead Sea is of no use to man or animal and a foul odour emanates from it.<a href=\"#_edn15\" name=\"_ednref15\">[15]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Muft\u012b <\/em>Muhammad Taqi Usman\u012b <em>\u1e62<\/em><em>ahib<\/em> writes, \u201cNo traces of these towns are found today, and most probably they were submerged in the Dead Sea of Jordan, which is also named as the Sea of L\u016bt.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn16\" name=\"_ednref16\">[16]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All\u0101h refers to the city of the people of L\u016bt (Peace be on him) in the Noble Qur\u2019\u0101n as <em>Mu\u2019tafik\u0101t<\/em> (overturned cities) because they were overturned.<a href=\"#_edn17\" name=\"_ednref17\">[17]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Punishment of the People of L\u016bt\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>(Peace be on him)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>L\u016bt (Peace be on him) forbade his people from unlawful, evil and detestable ways including homosexuality. However, they did not accept the advice and persisted in their sinful activities. In fact, they asked for the punishment of All\u0101h, the Most Powerful. So, All\u0101h destroyed them with a severe punishment. They were afflicted with three types of punishment. (1) a loud sound, (2) their city was turned upside down, and (3) stones were rained on them.<\/p>\n<p>Almighty All\u0101h says in the Noble Qur\u2019\u0101n, \u201c<em>So a scream seized them at sunrise. Thereafter we turned them upside down and showered clay pebbles on them.<\/em>\u201d<a href=\"#_edn18\" name=\"_ednref18\">[18]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This verse indicates that the first infliction was a harsh sound, then came other punishments.<a href=\"#_edn19\" name=\"_ednref19\">[19]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is understood from the verses of the Qur\u2019\u0101n that the stones which struck the people of L\u016bt (Peace be on him) were not ordinary stones, but stones that were baked from clay. They rained incessantly and each bore the name of the person whom it was to strike. Commentators mention that Jibra\u2019\u012bl (Peace be on him) lifted up the entire piece of land on which the town was situated. After raising it to a certain height, he threw it down headlong.<a href=\"#_edn20\" name=\"_ednref20\">[20]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Lesson<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Almighty All\u0101h has made this event a lesson and warning for the people of the world that if they indulge in this shameful act, they should not consider themselves very far from this punishment. It can even come today. The Prophet (May All\u0101h send blessings and peace on him) said, \u201cEven in my nation, some people will do what the people of L\u016bt (Peace be on him) used to do. When this starts happening, then wait, for they too would be subjected to the same punishment that was inflicted on the people of L\u016bt (Peace be on him).\u201d<a href=\"#_edn21\" name=\"_ednref21\">[21]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note- The punishment of turning the earth upside down has a particular correspondence with their act of shame and immodesty because they were guilty of perversion.<a href=\"#_edn22\" name=\"_ednref22\">[22]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Punishment for those who Engage in the Act of the People of L\u016bt (Peace be on him)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <em>\u1e62<\/em><em>a<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>\u0101bah<\/em> (May All\u0101h be pleased with them) agreed that the people who commit the act of the people of L\u016bt (Peace be on him) should be killed because Ibn \u02bfAbb\u0101s (May All\u0101h be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of All\u0101h (Peace be on him ) said, \u201cWhomever you find doing the act of the people of L\u016bt, then kill the doer and the one it is done to.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn23\" name=\"_ednref23\">[23]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, they differed on how they should be executed. Some <em>\u1e62<\/em><em>a<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>\u0101bah<\/em> (May All\u0101h be pleased with them) said that they should be burnt to death. Some are of the opinion that they should be smashed under a falling wall. Some say that they should be stoned to death, some say that they are to be beheaded with a sword and some are of the opinion that they should be pushed down from a high mountain and rocks thrown on them.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the opinion of the Jurists differed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Im\u0101m<\/em> Ab\u016b \u1e24anifah (May All\u0101h have mercy on him) says that the punishment given to the person who commits this act should match the punishment which came upon the people of L\u016bt (Peace be on him) by the command of All\u0101h that rocks rained from the skies and the floor of the earth flipped upside down. Therefore, this person should be pushed down from a high mountain and rocks should be thrown from above on top of him.<a href=\"#_edn24\" name=\"_ednref24\">[24]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ibn \u02bfAbb\u0101s (May All\u0101h be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of All\u0101h (Peace be on him) said, \u201cWhomever you find doing the act of the people of L\u016bt, then kill the doer and the one it is done to.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn25\" name=\"_ednref25\">[25]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The exception being the person who has been forcibly penetrated in the anus, against his or her will.<\/p>\n<p><em>Im\u0101m<\/em> M\u0101lik, <em>Im\u0101m<\/em> Sh\u0101fi\u02bf\u012b, <em>Im\u0101m<\/em> A\u1e25mad ibn \u1e24ambal and <em>Im\u0101m<\/em> Is\u1e25\u0101q (May All\u0101h shower his mercy on them) say that those who engage in this shameful act should be stoned to death, whether they are married or not.<\/p>\n<p>Some Scholars, including \u1e24asan Al-Ba\u1e63r\u012b, Ibr\u0101h\u012bm An-Nakha\u02bf\u012b, \u02bfA\u1e6d\u0101 ibn Ab\u012b Rab\u0101\u1e25 (May All\u0101h shower his mercy on them) say that their punishment would be similar to an adulterer. That is, if he is married, then he will be stoned to death otherwise he will be given one hundred lashes.<\/p>\n<p>This is also the opinion of Sufy\u0101n Thawr\u012b and the Scholars of Kufah (May All\u0101h shower his mercy on them).<a href=\"#_edn26\" name=\"_ednref26\">[26]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Note<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 The prescribed punishments can only be carried out by the legal authority in a country that practices Islamic Law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Punishment for those who Engage in the Act of Lesbianism<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The scholars agree that there is no <em>\u1e25<\/em><em>add <\/em>punishment for lesbianism because it is not <em>zin\u0101<\/em> (unlawful intercourse). Rather a <em>ta<\/em><em>\u02bf<\/em><em>dh\u012br<\/em> punishment must be imposed, because it is a sin.<a href=\"#_edn27\" name=\"_ednref27\">[27]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Ta<\/em><em>\u02bf<\/em><em>dh\u012br<\/em> refers to a discretionary punishment for crimes whose measure is not fixed in the Qur\u2019\u0101n and \u1e24ad\u012bth and is left to the Muslim ruler or judge to impose according to what he sees suitable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Is it Permissible to Support and Promote Homosexuality?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is <strong>not<\/strong> permissible to commit any sin or even support it in Islam. From the above-mentioned verses and narrations, we understand that homosexuality is a grave sin and is contrary to the teachings of Islam. Therefore, it is not permissible to support it at all. In fact, it is compulsory to speak out and even vote against it if necessary. Those people who support it or believe that they should be given rights must keep the stern warning of All\u0101h in front of them at all times. Almighty All\u0101h says, \u201c<em>And do not assist each other in sin and transgression. Fear All\u0101h! Most surely All\u0101h is severe in punishment.<\/em>\u201d<a href=\"#_edn28\" name=\"_ednref28\">[28]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Our Responsibility<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is our responsibility to stop evil and protect ourselves and others from sins.<\/p>\n<p>The Prophet (May blessing and peace be on him) said, \u201cWhoever among you sees an evil action [and can change it with his hand], let him change it with his hand.
