Is the nursing profession permissible for Muslim women?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Answer:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <strong>normal circumstances<\/strong>, it is <strong>not<\/strong> permissible for women to nurse (medically treat) strange (non-mahram) men because there is a fear of fitnah. This \u2018fear of fitnah\u2019 should\u00a0 not be\u00a0misconstrued as unfounded or far-fetched, rather it is a common occurrence in [the modern workplace, not excluding] hospitals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is a leeway for a woman to work as a nurse in a ward which is designated for women only. She will fulfill her responsibility taking the <em>Shar\u2019ee<\/em> boundaries of hijab into consideration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>It is not permissible for a woman to work in the male ward as a nurse or for her to be in seclusion with a male doctor or for her to wear such garments or uniforms which do not fulfill the requirements of Islamic hijab.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is not imprisonment for our Muslim sisters, rather it is a means of securing and protecting her.<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Extraordinary situations, like when a natural disaster occurs, and a large amount of people are killed, or the case of war is slightly different from the normal case [in ruling]. In such cases, if there are not enough males to look after the wounded, then women will try their best, as far as possible, to fulfil the Shar\u2019ee boundaries of hijab and treat the wounded. This is evident in a hadith which Imam Bukhari narrates from Rabee\u2019 bint Mu\u2019awwidh (May Allah be pleased with her) that she said, \u201cWe used to bring water with the Messenger \ufdfa in the battle field, treat the wounded and transfer the slain.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under this hadith, in the <em>hashiyah<\/em> (footnotes) of Bukhari it is written that from this it is known that at times of <strong>dire need<\/strong> a non-mahram woman may medically treat a strange man.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u0641\u064a\u0647 \u062c\u0648\u0627\u0632 \u0645\u0639\u0627\u0644\u062c\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0631\u0623\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u062c\u0646\u0628\u064a\u0629 \u0644\u0644\u0631\u062c\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u062c\u0646\u0628\u064a \u0644\u0644\u0636\u0631\u0648\u0631\u0629<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[iii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>However, as mentioned, the general rule cannot be based on isolated and abnormal circumstances.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(Faqeehul Asr Mufti Maulana) Khalid Saifullah Rahmani (May Allah preserve him)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Kitabul Fatawa<\/span> Vol.6 Pg.209-210<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT FOOTNOTES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\">[i]<\/a> A simple glance of the news (October-December 2017\/<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weinstein_effect\">The Weinstein effect<\/a>) proves that , in this society of &#8216;freedom&#8217; and &#8216;rights&#8217;, majority of the women, across the full spectrum of the workplace, are being harassed by men.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a United Nation website\u2019s document titled \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/womenwatch\/osagi\/pdf\/whatissh.pdf\">What is Sexual Harassment<\/a>\u2019, examples are given as follows: <strong>VERBAL<\/strong>: \u00a0Referring to an adult as a girl, hunk, doll, babe, or honey \u00b7 Whistling at someone, cat calls \u00b7 Making sexual comments about a person&#8217;s body \u00b7 Making sexual comments or innuendos,\u00a0 Turning work discussions to sexual topics \u00b7 Telling sexual jokes or stories \u00b7 Asking about sexual fantasies, preferences, or history \u00b7 Asking personal questions about social or sexual life \u00b7 Making kissing sounds, howling, and smacking lips \u00b7 Making sexual comments about a person&#8217;s clothing, anatomy, or looks \u00b7 Repeatedly asking out a person who is not interested \u00b7 Telling lies or spreading rumors about a person&#8217;s personal sex life <strong>NON-VERBAL:<\/strong> Looking a person up and down (Elevator eyes) \u00b7 Staring at someone \u00b7 Blocking a person&#8217;s path \u00b7 Following the person \u00b7 Giving personal gifts \u00b7 Displaying sexually suggestive visuals \u00b7 Making sexual gestures with hands or through body movements \u00b7 Making facial expressions such as winking, throwing kisses, or licking lips <strong>PHYSICAL<\/strong>: Actual or attempted rape or sexual assault, Giving a massage around the neck or shoulders, Touching the person&#8217;s clothing, hair, or body \u00b7 Hugging, kissing, patting, or stroking \u00b7 Touching or rubbing oneself sexually around another person \u00b7 Standing close or brushing up against another person.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.com\/archives\/3014\">Shar&#8217;ee Hijab<\/a>, when practiced properly as Allah and His Messenger \ufdfa ordained, protects the women folk from all of this. Allah Ta&#8217;ala says, &#8220;O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known so <strong>as not to be harrased<\/strong>. And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.&#8221; (Al-Ahzaab: 59)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"#_ednref2\" name=\"_edn2\">[ii]<\/a> Sahih Bukhari 1\/403<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"#_ednref3\" name=\"_edn3\">[iii]<\/a> Hashiyah ala Sahihil Bukhari 1\/403 The Sahabiyaat helping out in the open air battle fields, where there was clearly no possibility of Fitnah, is still an example of the <em>fiqhi<\/em>\u00a0maxim (\u0627\u0644\u0636\u0631\u0648\u0631\u0627\u062a \u062a\u0628\u064a\u062d \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062d\u0638\u0648\u0631\u0627\u062a) &#8220;Dire needs permit the prohibited.&#8221; This is derived from the verse in which, after listing many <em>haram<\/em> food items, Allah permits the person in dire need to consume them. He says, &#8220;He has only <strong>forbidden<\/strong> to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for other than Allah.\u00a0 <strong>But whoever is forced<\/strong> [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is <strong>no sin<\/strong> upon him.
