{"id":5700,"date":"2017-03-05T02:37:45","date_gmt":"2017-03-05T06:37:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.co\/?p=5700"},"modified":"2017-03-05T02:37:45","modified_gmt":"2017-03-05T06:37:45","slug":"we-dont-drag-our-trousers-below-our-ankles-out-of-pride","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.com\/?p=5700","title":{"rendered":"We Don&#039;t Drag our Trousers Below our Ankles out of Pride!"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Misconception 5<\/span><\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All those who wear their trousers below their ankles claim that \u201cWe don\u2019t do it out of pride.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Clarification:<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Allah <em>Ta\u2019ala<\/em> says, \u201cSo do not claim purity for yourselves. He is most knowing of who fears him.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li><em>Hafiz<\/em> Ibn Hajr Asqalani (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) writes in \u2018<em>Fathul Bari<\/em>\u2019, \u201c[The <em>faqeeh<\/em> and <em>muhaddith, Qadhi<\/em> Abu Bakr] Ibnul Arabi (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) said, \u2018It is not permissible for a man to let his garment cover his ankles and say, \u2018I am not dragging it out of pride\u2019, because the prohibition includes this in its wordings. It is not permissible for he whom the text includes in ruling to say, \u2018I am not following it because the primary reason is not in me\u2019, because this is a claim that is not accepted. Rather his lengthening of his lower garment below the ankles is a sign of his pride.\u2019\u201d Then <em>Hafiz<\/em> Ibn Hajr (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) states that this is supported by the <em>hadith<\/em>, \u201cBeware of trailing the lower garment, for it is from pride.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><em>Shaikh<\/em> Ibn Ataullah Iskandari<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) said, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cHe who attributes humility to himself is really proud.\u201d<\/span><a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a> Humility is the belief that one is the most contemptible and lowest person. The consideration of greatness in oneself is pride. So, the one who puts forth the claim that he is humble is in actual fact considering himself to be elevated. Thus, he is a man of pride.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>If we were to assume that it is not always an act of pride, then Ibn Hajr (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) says that it is still an action that has a high possibility of pride.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Ubaid ibn Khalid (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) said, \u201cI was walking and upon me was a sheet which I was dragging. So, a man said to me, \u2018Lift your garment because it is more righteous for you and long lasting.\u2019 So, I looked and it was the Prophet (\ufdfa). I said, <strong>\u2018It is a <em>burdah malhaa<\/em> (a black sheet with white lines).\u2019<\/strong> The Messenger (\ufdfa) retorted, \u2018Don\u2019t you have a role model in me?\u2019 He said, \u2018When I looked I saw that his garment was till the middle of his calf.\u2019\u201d [Tirmithi (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 ) in \u2018<em>Shamail<\/em>\u2019<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>.]\n<ol>\n<li>Some scholars explain that by saying it is a black sheet with white threads, the <em>Sahabi<\/em> was indicating that it was not a garment with which one can show off and be proud of. However, the Messenger (\ufdfa) informed him of two things. One, there is more piety in lifting it above, as one may feel he is not proud but in actual fact he is. Another point is that we should not feel we are above following the style of the Messenger (\ufdfa). This is why the Messenger (\ufdfa) rebuked him in a stern manner and said, \u201cDon\u2019t you have a role-model in me?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Another point the scholars derived from this is that one should lift his trousers high so as to prevent any possibility of it dragging below the ankles. This is called \u0633\u064e\u062f\u0651\u064b\u0627 \u0644\u0650\u0644\u0652\u0628\u064e\u0627\u0628\u0650 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0630\u0651\u064e\u0631\u0650\u064a\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0629\u0650 or \u201cclosing the doors and means of sin\u201d.<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <em>faqeeh<\/em> and <em>muhaddith<\/em>, <em>Mufti<\/em> Yusuf Ludhyanvi (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) states that in our times<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> the people who are accustomed to wearing their trousers, pants and lower garments below their ankles consider it an act of honour, rather, they feel ashamed and disgraced in lifting it above the ankles. They look with utmost disdain at the <em>Sunnah<\/em> of the beloved Prophet (\ufdfa), which is wearing the garments at mid-calf. Now you tell me, \u201cIs the cause for this anything other than arrogance and pride?\u201d This is why the respected mufti considered it a major sin, especially in our times. Rather, he went a step further and said, \u201cFurther than a major sin, there is a fear of losing one\u2019s Iman by looking at the Prophetic <em>Sunnah<\/em> in a condescending manner.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>In many of the narrations mentioned above, the Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) had instructed many <em>Sahabah<\/em> (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0645) to lift their garments above their ankles. Would we say, \u0627\u0644\u0639\u064a\u0627\u0630 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 (May Allah forbid), that those <em>Sahabah<\/em> were doing so out of pride? Obviously not.<\/li>\n<li>If anyone had the right to say, \u2018I don\u2019t do it out of pride,\u2019 it was Abu Bakr (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647), but he never made such claims of purification. So, who are we to profess such piety? I saw <em>Shaikh<\/em> Tajuddeen, when he returned from <em>Misr<\/em>, holding his advices and subtleties in very high regard. He used to speak in the <em>Jame Azhar<\/em> on a chair with such a speech that revived the hearts. He had combined the statements of the People (i.e. <em>Zuhhad<\/em>) with the narrations of the <em>Salaf<\/em> and other topics. So, he had a lot of followers.
