Question.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a grave is dug and it’s a bit shallow. Not the standard requirement depth. What do you do? Bury? Dig it to correct depth?<\/p>\n

Burying a deceased Muslim in a grave is Fardh Kifayah (compulsory) on the Muslim community when possible.[i]<\/a> Therefore the provision of a grave will also be compulsory (Fardh Kifayah) upon them.<\/p>\n

With regards to the depth, the great majority of jurists mention that it is compulsory to dig the grave deep enough to prevent the stench of the decomposing body from emitting into the air and to prevent animals of prey from being able to dig up the corpse. The scholars explain that this will be half of a Qaamah<\/strong>. This could be translated to mean either half the length of an average height person or<\/u> half of a fathom (6 Feet) which would be three feet<\/u>. The greater of the two measurements should be used as this is the minimal requirement.<\/p>\n

The Sunnah encourages to dig it deep. Deep is considered to be until the chest of an average height person or the full body\u2019s length. Digging deeper than this is not recommended. It has been narrated from Hazrat \u2018Umar bin \u2018Abdul \u2018Azzez (Rahimahullaahu Ta\u2019aalaa) that he said, \u201cDon\u2019t deepen my grave (deeper than the Sunnah depth), because certainly the best land is the highest\/elevated land and the worst land is the lowest land.\u201d<\/p>\n

It should be noted that in the countries where Shaqq graves are dug [ii](due to the soft nature of the earth) the area above the boards should fulfill the Minimal\/Recommended depth of the grave as the area beneath the boards (Al-Baitul Masqoof) is not taken into consideration as it has no impact in prevention of stench and protection of the deceased. Mufti Muhammad Salmaan Mansoorpuri (May Allah preserve him) mentions that the Shaqq grave has two parts. One area in which the deceased is placed and one area above the boards. From jurisprudential text it is understood that the depth of the area above the boards should be at least half the height of an individual and the depth of the inner area should be at least such that when the boards are placed, it does not touch the body of the deceased.<\/p>\n

Based upon this, if one reaches with a body to the cemetery and the grave has not fulfilled the required compulsory depth, then it would be compulsory to dig that much. If it did not reach the required Sunnah depth, then it would be Sunnah to dig that much but not compulsory. Thereafter the body would be buried. May Allah Azza wa Jall grant us the ability to live our lives according to the Sunnah and be buried according to the Sunnah. Aameen.<\/p>\n
