{"id":4738,"date":"2016-03-24T15:33:02","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T19:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.co\/?p=4738"},"modified":"2016-03-24T15:33:02","modified_gmt":"2016-03-24T19:33:02","slug":"the-ninety-nine-99-names-of-allah-taala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.com\/?p=4738","title":{"rendered":"The ninety nine (99) names of Allah Ta\u2019ala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Question<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) Can I\u00a0have the reference for the ninety nine\u00a0beautiful names of Allah Ta\u2019ala,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) And are there other names?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Answer:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu \u2018anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu \u2018alayhi wa sallam) said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2018Verily Allah Ta\u2019ala has ninety nine names, whomsoever memorizes them, will enter Jannah\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 2736 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 6750)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although the above narration is\u00a0authentic, the Muhaddithun have differed on the authenticity of those narrations which go on explicitly mentioning the ninety nine names.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Numerous Muhaddithun are of the opinion that the ninety nine names are <strong>not<\/strong> from the side of Nabi (sallallahu \u2018alayhi wa sallam), rather one of the narrators of the Hadith had added these names after searching in the Quran and Hadith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(Refer: Sunan Tirmidhi, hadith: 3507, Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1 pg. 16\/17)<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Despite this, one is still allowed to practice on it as will be explained further on. Especially since those who were of the above view, have not clearly mentioned any prohibition.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many other\u00a0Muhaddithun\u00a0have <strong>accepted<\/strong> the narration which records\u00a0the ninety nine names to be from Nabi (sallallahu \u2018alayhi wa salaam) himself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(Refer: Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 808 and Al Adhkar, Hadith: 309)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hafiz ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has classified the chain of narrators found in Tirmidhi and Sahih Ibn Hibban as being \u2018the closest chain to authenticity\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">(Fathul Bari, Hadith 6410)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although there exists a difference of opinion, it appears as though majority of the \u2018Ulama\u00a0have accepted the ninety nine names as suitable for practice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many \u2018Ulama,\u00a0like Imam Ghazali, Fakhrud Din Ar Razi, Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyyah, Ahmad Zaruq and others (rahimahumullah) have written commentaries on the ninety nine names of Allah Ta\u2019ala.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) The commentators of Hadith are unanimous that Allah Ta\u2019ala has numerous other names, not just ninety nine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The above Hadith merely states\u00a0whomsoever memorizes the ninety nine names will enter Jannah , not that Allah Ta\u2019ala only has ninety nine names. This is proven in the following narration recorded by Imams Ahmad (vol. 1 pg. 391) and Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, (Hadith: 972) (rahimahumallah) which has the following words:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u2026.
