{"id":4574,"date":"2016-02-19T21:10:57","date_gmt":"2016-02-20T01:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.co\/?p=4574"},"modified":"2016-02-19T21:10:57","modified_gmt":"2016-02-20T01:10:57","slug":"77-branches-faith-islam-imam-baihaqi-r-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.com\/?p=4574","title":{"rendered":"77 Branches of Faith In Islam       By Imam Baihaqi (r.a.)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"hadith_narrated\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Islam is not only the name of a faith but complete way of life, which was brought into the world from Almighty Allah, Allah through His true and devoted Apostle, Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Islamic way of Life is preserved to this day in its pristine purity in the Quran and the holy Traditions (Ahaadith). Those who accepts the correct Islamic beliefs and practices are called Muslims and those who practice upon them according to their ability are on their way to become a true Mu&#8217;min (believer).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (radhiallahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Faith has over seventy branches or over sixty branches, the most excellent of which is the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the humblest of which is the, removal of what is injurious from the path: and modesty is the branch of faith.&#8221; [Muslim #35b]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Abu Abdillah Husain Al-Halimi [b.338] listed 77 branches of Iman in his book called \u2018Al-Mihaaj\u2019. After reading this book Imam Baihaqi [d. 458 A.H] compiled his 13 volume encyclopedia on the topic. For each branch of Imam he mentioned Quranic verses, Prophetic ahadith and statements of the pious predecessors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These seventy-seven branches are some of the essential\u00a0attributes and characteristics\u00a0that a true believer should have or strive towards having.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Complete\u00a0<em>Iman<\/em>\u00a0in reality consists of three components:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Confirmation by heart of all the essentials of\u00a0<em>Iman<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Confirmation by tongue of all the essentials of\u00a0<em>Iman<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Confirmation by actions of all the essentials of\u00a0<em>Iman<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus, the\u00a0\u201c77 Branches of\u00a0Faith\u201d are divided into three categories:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>the first of which concern the intention, belief and action of the heart,<\/li>\n<li>the second concern the use of the tongue,<\/li>\n<li>and the third concern all the remaining parts of the body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>30 Qualities are Connected to the Heart<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>To believe in All\u0101h Most High.<\/li>\n<li>To believe that everything other than All\u0101h\u00a0was non-existent. Thereafter, All\u0101h\u00a0Most High created these things and subsequently they came into existence.<\/li>\n<li>To believe in the existence of angels.<\/li>\n<li>To believe that all the heavenly books that were sent to the different prophets are true. However, apart from the Qur\u2019an, all other books are not valid anymore.<\/li>\n<li>To believe that all the prophets are true. However, we are commanded to follow the Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa alone.<\/li>\n<li>To believe that All\u0101h\u00a0Most High has knowledge of everything from before-hand and that only that which He sanctions or wishes will occur.<\/li>\n<li>To believe that Resurrection will definitely occur.<\/li>\n<li>To believe in the existence of Heaven.<\/li>\n<li>To believe in the existence of Hell.<\/li>\n<li>To have love for All\u0101h\u00a0Most High.<\/li>\n<li>To have love for the Messenger of All\u0101h, \ufdfa.<\/li>\n<li>To love or hate someone solely because of All\u0101h.<\/li>\n<li>To execute all actions with the intention of religion alone.<\/li>\n<li>To regret and express remorse when a sin is committed.<\/li>\n<li>To fear All\u0101h\u00a0Most High.<\/li>\n<li>To hope for the mercy of All\u0101h\u00a0Most High.<\/li>\n<li>To be modest.<\/li>\n<li>To express gratitude over a bounty or favour.<\/li>\n<li>To fulfill promises.<\/li>\n<li>To exercise patience.<\/li>\n<li>To consider yourself lower than others.<\/li>\n<li>To have mercy on the creation.<\/li>\n<li>To be pleased with whatever you experience from All\u0101h\u00a0Most High.<\/li>\n<li>To place your trust in All\u0101h\u00a0Most High.<\/li>\n<li>Not to boast or brag over any quality that you possess.<\/li>\n<li>Not to have malice or hatred towards anybody.<\/li>\n<li>Not to be envious of anyone.<\/li>\n<li>Not to become angry.<\/li>\n<li>Not to wish harm for anyone.<\/li>\n<li>Not to have love for the world.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>7 Qualities are Connected to the Tongue<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>To recite the Testimony of Faith [<em>Kalimatu-sh Shah\u0101dah<\/em>] with the tongue.<\/li>\n<li>To recite the Qur\u2019\u0101n.<\/li>\n<li>To acquire knowledge.<\/li>\n<li>To pass on knowledge.<\/li>\n<li>To make supplications [<em>du\u2019a<\/em>] to All\u0101h\u00a0Most High.<\/li>\n<li>To make invocations [<em>dhikr<\/em>] of All\u0101h\u00a0Most High.<\/li>\n<li>To abstain from the following:\n<ul>\n<li>lies,<\/li>\n<li>backbiting,<\/li>\n<li>vulgar words,<\/li>\n<li>cursing, and<\/li>\n<li>singing that is contrary to the Shar\u012b\u2019ah.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>40 Qualities are Connected to the Entire Body<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>To make ablution\u00a0[<em>wud\u016b<\/em>], take bath\u00a0[<em>ghusl<\/em>], and keep one\u2019s clothing clean.<\/li>\n<li>To be steadfast in offering the prayer\u00a0[<em>sal\u0101t<\/em>].<\/li>\n<li>To pay the tithe\u00a0[<em>zak\u0101t<\/em>] and\u00a0<em>Sadaqatu-l Fitr<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>To fast.<\/li>\n<li>To perform the Hajj.<\/li>\n<li>To make\u00a0<em>i\u2019tik\u0101f<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>To move away or migrate from that place which is harmful for one\u2019s religion [<em>din<\/em>].<\/li>\n<li>To fulfill the vows that have been made to All\u0101h\u00a0Most High.<\/li>\n<li>To fulfill the oaths that are not sinful.<\/li>\n<li>To pay the expiation\u00a0[<em>kaff\u0101rah<\/em>]for unfulfilled oaths.<\/li>\n<li>To cover those parts of the body that are obligatory\u00a0[<em>fard<\/em>] to cover.<\/li>\n<li>To perform the ritual slaughter [Udhiya\/Qurbani].<\/li>\n<li>To enshroud and bury the deceased.<\/li>\n<li>To fulfill your debts.<\/li>\n<li>To abstain from prohibited things when undertaking monetary transactions.<\/li>\n<li>To NOT conceal something true which you may have witnessed.<\/li>\n<li>To get married when the\u00a0<em>nafs<\/em>\u00a0desires to do so.<\/li>\n<li>To fulfill the rights of those who are under you.<\/li>\n<li>To provide comfort to one\u2019s parents.<\/li>\n<li>To rear children in the proper manner.<\/li>\n<li>To NOT\u00a0sever relations with one\u2019s friends and relatives.<\/li>\n<li>To obey one\u2019s master.<\/li>\n<li>To be just.<\/li>\n<li>To NOT initiate any way that is contrary to that of the generality of the Muslims.<\/li>\n<li>To obey the ruler, provided what he orders is not contrary to the\u00a0<em>Shar\u012b\u2019ah<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>To make peace between two warring groups or individuals.<\/li>\n<li>To assist in noble tasks.<\/li>\n<li>To command the good and\u00a0forbid the evil.<\/li>\n<li>To mete out punishments according to the Shari\u2019ah,\u00a0IF it is the government.<\/li>\n<li>To fight the enemies of religion [<em>din<\/em>] whenever such an occasion presents itself.<\/li>\n<li>To fulfill one\u2019s trusts (amana).<\/li>\n<li>To give loans to those who are in need.<\/li>\n<li>To see to the needs of one\u2019s neighbour.<\/li>\n<li>To ensure that one\u2019s income is pure.<\/li>\n<li>To spend according to the Shar\u012b\u2019ah.<\/li>\n<li>To reply to one who has greeted you.<\/li>\n<li>To say\u00a0<em>yarhamuka-Ll\u0101h<\/em>\u00a0[All\u0101h have mercy on you!] when anyone says\u00a0<em>alhamduli<\/em>\u2013<em>Ll\u0101h<\/em>\u00a0[all praise is for All\u0101h] after sneezing.<\/li>\n<li>To NOT cause harm to anyone unjustly.<\/li>\n<li>To abstain from games and amusements contrary to the Shariah.<\/li>\n<li>To remove pebbles, stones, thorns, sticks, and the like from the road.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">May Allah Ta&#8217;aala grant us the tawfeeq and ability to inculcate all the above\u00a0qualities in to our lives, so we may earn His
