He commands us:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0627\u0633\u062a\u0639\u064a\u0646\u0648\u0627 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0635\u0628\u0631 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0635\u0644\u0648\u0629<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cSeek help through patience and sal\u0101h.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\"><sup><sup>[i]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first and foremost individual to practice on this injunction was none other than the beloved Messenger of Allah (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645):<\/p>\n<p>It is reported from Huzaifah (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0643\u0627\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0628\u064a \u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645 \u0625\u0630\u0627 \u062d\u0632\u0628\u0647 \u0623\u0645\u0631 \u0635\u0644\u0649<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThe Prophet (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) was such that whenever any matter troubled him<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a> he would offer sal\u0101h.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\"><sup><sup>[iii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Messenger of Allah (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) also informed us, in an authentic narration of Musnad Ahmed, that this was the <em>Sunnah <\/em>(practice) of the (other) Prophets (\u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645) as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0648\u0643\u0627\u0646\u0648\u0627 \u064a\u0641\u0632\u0639\u0648\u0646 \u0625\u0630\u0627 \u0641\u0632\u0639\u0648\u0627 \u0625\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0635\u0644\u0627\u0629<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cWhen they (the previous prophets) became worried over some matter, they would take recourse to sal\u0101h\u201d<a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\"><sup><sup>[iv]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was also the <em>Sunnah <\/em>(practice) of the Sahabah (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0645). Hakim narrates in \u2018Mustadrak\u2019: \u201cOnce Ibn Abbas (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) was traveling and the news of the death of a relative reached him. He performed two rakats (units) of salah. Thereafter he said, \u201cWe practiced what Allah has commanded us: \u2018Seek help through patience and sal\u0101h.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\"><sup><sup>[v]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Salah is not valid without wudhu. Allah states:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u064a\u064e\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u064a\u0651\u064f\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0630\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064e \u0622\u0645\u064e\u0646\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0625\u0650\u0630\u064e\u0627 \u0642\u064f\u0645\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0635\u0651\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0627\u0629\u0650 \u0641\u064e\u0627\u063a\u0652\u0633\u0650\u0644\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0648\u064f\u062c\u064f\u0648\u0647\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0648\u064e\u0623\u064e\u064a\u0652\u062f\u0650\u064a\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0627\u0641\u0650\u0642\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0627\u0645\u0652\u0633\u064e\u062d\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0628\u0650\u0631\u064f\u0621\u064f\u0648\u0633\u0650\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0648\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0631\u0652\u062c\u064f\u0644\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0643\u064e\u0639\u0652\u0628\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0646\u0650<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cO you who believe! When you intend to offer the prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn6\" name=\"_ednref6\"><sup><sup>[vi]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Messenger of Allah (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cThe prayer of a person who nullifies his wudhu is not accepted till he performs (repeats) the ablution.&#8221;<a href=\"#_edn7\" name=\"_ednref7\"><sup><sup>[vii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From among the etiquettes of wudhu is to perform it fully and thoroughly. The Messenger of Allah (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) encouraged this with the following words:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cShall I not tell you something by means of which Allah erases sins and raises people in status?&#8221; They (the companions) said: &#8220;Yes, 0 Messenger of Allah!&#8221; He said: &#8220;Performing wudhu properly during times when it is difficult to do so \u2026\u201d<a href=\"#_edn8\" name=\"_ednref8\"><sup><sup>[viii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the time of need a person should also turn to Allah and fervently supplicate to Him. Allah Ta\u2019ala rhetorically asks in the Quran:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0623\u064e\u0645\u0651\u064e\u0646 \u064a\u064f\u062c\u0650\u064a\u0628\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064f\u0636\u0652\u0637\u064e\u0631\u0651\u064e \u0625\u0650\u0630\u064e\u0627 \u062f\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0627\u0647\u064f \u0648\u064e\u064a\u064e\u0643\u0652\u0634\u0650\u0641\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0651\u064f\u0648\u0621\u064e<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cWho hears the cry of the anguished (soul) when it calls to Him\u00a0and relieves its suffering?\u201d<a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\"><sup><sup>[ix]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rather Allah commands us:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0627\u062f\u0652\u0639\u064f\u0648\u0646\u0650\u064a \u0623\u064e\u0633\u0652\u062a\u064e\u062c\u0650\u0628\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cCall unto Me; I will answer your prayer.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn10\" name=\"_ednref10\"><sup><sup>[x]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Praising Allah and invoking His blessings upon His Messenger (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) are also from amongst the etiquettes of <em>dua<\/em> (supplication). The Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) heard a person supplicating during prayer. He did not mention the greatness of Allah, nor did he invoke blessings on the Prophet (\ufdfa). The Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) said: He made haste. He then called him and said either to him or to another person: If any of you prays, he should mention the exaltation of his Lord in the beginning and praise Him; he should then invoke blessings on the Prophet (\ufdfa); thereafter he should supplicate Allah for anything he wishes.<a href=\"#_edn11\" name=\"_ednref11\"><sup><sup>[xi]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our beloved Nabi (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) has taught us certain words to say at the time of distress. In an authentic hadith of Imam Ahmed\u2019s <em>Musnad<\/em>, Abdullah ibn Ja\u2019far (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) narrates that when the Nabi (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) became concerned over a matter, he would say,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0&#8220;<strong>\u0644\u0627 \u0625\u0644\u0647 \u0625\u0644\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0644\u064a\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0643\u0631\u064a\u0645 \u060c \u0633\u0628\u062d\u0627\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0631\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0631\u0634 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0638\u064a\u0645 \u060c \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0645\u062f \u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0631\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u0644\u0645\u064a\u0646<\/strong> &#8220;<a href=\"#_edn12\" name=\"_ednref12\"><sup><sup>[xii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From the above, it has been established that when a person is in need, he should do the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Be patient<\/li>\n<li>Turn to Allah in salah<\/li>\n<li>Perform a thorough wudhu before the salah<\/li>\n<li>Ask Allah to remove the difficulty<\/li>\n<li>Commence the dua with praises and salutations<\/li>\n<li>Recite the prescribed prophetic duas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sequence of carrying out a thorough wudhu, performing salah and thereafter supplicating to Allah is also established in a sound hadith of Musnad Ahmed. Abu Dardaa (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) narrates that the Messenger of Allah stated,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhoever performs wud\u016b\u2019, perfecting the wud\u016b\u2019, and then he offers two rak\u2018ats of sal\u0101h, making them complete, All\u0101h will give him what he asks, immediately or with delay.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn13\" name=\"_ednref13\"><sup><sup>[xiii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hafiz Ibn Hajr classified this hadith as sound in \u2018Nataa-ijul Afkaar\u2019<a href=\"#_edn14\" name=\"_ednref14\"><sup><sup>[xiv]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>, as did Allamah Suyuti in \u2018Ta\u2019aqqubaat\u2019<a href=\"#_edn15\" name=\"_ednref15\"><sup><sup>[xv]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> and \u2018Al-La-aali\u2019<a href=\"#_edn16\" name=\"_ednref16\"><sup><sup>[xvi]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Detailed Hadith of Salatul Haajah<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There is a specific hadith collected by Imam Tirmithi and others that mentions the above general etiquettes in a detailed sequence. Abdullah ibn Abi Awfaa (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) narrates that Allah&#8217;s Messenger (\ufdfa) said: &#8220;Whoever has a need from Allah, or from one of the sons of Adam, then let him perform wudhu, performing it well, then pray two rak`ah, then praise Allah and send salutations upon the Prophet (\ufdfa). Glorious is Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. I ask You for that which warrants Your mercy, and that which will determine Your forgiveness, and the spoils (fruits) of every righteous deed, and safety from every sin; do not leave a sin for me without forgiving it, nor a worry without relieving it, nor a need that pleases you without granting it; O Most-Merciful of those who have mercy.'&#8221;<a href=\"#_edn17\" name=\"_ednref17\"><sup><sup>[xvii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Imam Ibn Majah\u2019s narration adds: \u201cThen he should ask Allah for whatever he wants in this world and in the Hereafter, for it is decreed.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn18\" name=\"_ednref18\"><sup><sup>[xviii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After narrating the hadith Imam Tirmithi remarks: \u201cThis hadith is ghareeb. There is a disparagement in its chain. Faa-id ibn Abdur Rahman is considered weak in hadith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After narrating the hadith in \u2018Mustadrak\u2019, Hakim says that Faa-id is \u2018balanced\u2019 in hadith. However, Imam Zahabi refutes this by stating, \u201cRather, he is rejected.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn19\" name=\"_ednref19\"><sup><sup>[xix]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> Some muhadditheen have even charged him with lying.<a href=\"#_edn20\" name=\"_ednref20\"><sup><sup>[xx]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> Therefore this hadith is extremely weak as classified by Hafiz Sakhawi in \u2018Al-Qawlul Badee\u2019<a href=\"#_edn21\" name=\"_ednref21\"><sup><sup>[xxi]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>. Yes, Allamah Munziri has stated: \u201cReliable (muhadditheen) have narrated from Faa-id, and Ibn Adi has remarked: \u2018Even though he is weak, his hadiths are still written.\u2019 \u201d<a href=\"#_edn22\" name=\"_ednref22\"><sup><sup>[xxii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, on studying the hadith closely we realize that the only addition in this hadith (apart from the general practice of a person in need) is the second part of the specific dua it mentions. The above-mentioned already established from the Quran and Saheeh Sunnah that a person in need should:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Be patient,<\/li>\n<li>Turn to Allah in salah<\/li>\n<li>Perform a thorough wudhu before the salah<\/li>\n<li>Ask Allah to remove the difficulty<\/li>\n<li>Commence the dua with praises and salutations<\/li>\n<li>Recite the prescribed prophetic duas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To support the general procedure of Salatul Hajah mentioned in the hadith of Ibn Abi Awfaa (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647), Hafiz Ibn Hajr narrated the hadith of Abu Dardaa (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) \u2013mentioned above- and graded it sound. Shaikh Mahmood Subki mentioned verse {2:45} and the narration of Abdullah ibn Ja\u2019far to support the method of Salatul Haajah and dua thereafter in his commentary of Sunan Abi Dawud.<a href=\"#_edn23\" name=\"_ednref23\"><sup><sup>[xxiii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As for the specific dua mentioned in Ibn Abi Awfaa\u2019s narration, then the first part is supported by the narration of Abdullah ibn Ja\u2019far (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) as was already mentioned. As for the second part which commences from \u0623\u064e\u0633\u0652\u0623\u064e\u0644\u064f\u0643\u064e, Hafiz Ibn Hajr mentions a shaahid (supporting hadith) for it from Anas (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647), collected by Tabrani in his \u2018Al-Dua\u2019<a href=\"#_edn24\" name=\"_ednref24\"><sup><sup>[xxiv]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>. He however, states that one of its narrators, Abu Ma\u2019mar Abbaad ibn Abdus Samad is extremely weak. He then states, &#8220;There is another chain to Anas narrated in Musnadul Firdaws. However, Ibn Hibban has mentioned him in his \u2018Thiqaat\u2019 (compilation of reliable narrators)<a href=\"#_edn33\" name=\"_ednref33\"><sup><sup>[xxxiii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>. The former three scholars mention two hadiths of his while Ibn Hibban says, \u201cHe narrates ten hadiths.\u201d Ibn Hibban would have thus verified his hadiths and thereafter graded him reliable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even though some of the narrators in the first two chains were accused of lying or narrating fabrications, there are no such transmitters in the last two chains. Therefore, the latter chains would elevate the former ones. It would be incorrect to completely disregard this dua.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rather, when we look at the complete dua, we see that it begins with Allah\u2019s glorification and thereafter one\u2019s need are sought. The words of the dua are also very comprehensive. The Messenger (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) loved to use comprehensive or all-inclusive supplications as narrated by Abu Dawud and others<a href=\"#_edn34\" name=\"_ednref34\"><sup><sup>[xxxiv]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A Principle of Usulul Hadith Concerning Duas Collected in Weak Narrations<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The great muhaddith, Hafiz Ibn Nasiruddeen Dimashqi, remarked concerning a dua which he classified as extremely weak, due to a narrator who was accused of lying,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHowever this hadith of his is concerning encouragement in dua, and it has a few of its etiquettes; glorifying the Lord and praising Him. This is the first etiquette of dua, as narrated in the Sunnah.\u201d<sup><sup><a href=\"#_edn35\" name=\"_ednref35\">[xxxv]<\/a><\/sup><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Therefore he allowed using this dua since it comprised of the etiquettes of dua and did not have any questionable words in it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shaikh Muhammad Awwamah adds that allowing the usage of such weak narrations concerning dua is a principle that Hafiz Abdul Azeem al-Munziri also follows in his \u2018Targheeb wat Tarheeb\u2019.<a href=\"#_edn36\" name=\"_ednref36\"><sup><sup>[xxxvi]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Based on this principle, even though Ibn Hajr\u2019s main student Hafiz Sakhaawi considered the hadith of Ibn Abi Awfaa (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647), collected by Tirmithi and others, extremely weak, as quoted above, he confidently adds: \u201cIt will be written in Fadhaail A\u2019maal.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn37\" name=\"_ednref37\"><sup><sup>[xxxvii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since we are allowed to supplicate in our own words outside of salah and are not restricted to <em>masnoon<\/em> duas, coupled with the fact that this dua does not have any questionable words,<a href=\"#_edn38\" name=\"_ednref38\"><sup><sup>[xxxviii]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> this dua will be permissible.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, if a person is in need he may do any one of the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Be patient<\/li>\n<li>Perform salah<\/li>\n<li>Supplicate to Allah with prescribed masnoon duas<\/li>\n<li>Supplicate to Allah in his own words<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Combine all the above in the manner mentioned in Ibn Abi Awfaa\u2019s narration.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, to restrict a person in need to the method mentioned in Ibn Abi Awfaa\u2019s narration would be incorrect. At the same time, there is nothing wrong in practicing on this hadith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rather, the ulama of the ummah have always practiced on this hadith of Ibn Abi Awfaa (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0collected by Tirmithi and others. This is proven from the fact that the muhadditheen, fuqaha and sufiyah have mentioned this narration in their respective books to teach the ummah this noble practice. A weak hadith is elevated to the status of being authentic when the ulama of the ummah accept it and practice on it.<a href=\"#_edn39\" name=\"_ednref39\"><sup><sup>[xxxix]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This may be the reason why the last of the mujtahideen, Allamah Anwar Shah Kashmiri, considered the hadith under discussion as strong.<a href=\"#_edn40\"
