Traditionally, in each\u00a0tarw\u012bhah,<\/em>\u00a0the\u00a0mustahab\u00a0<\/em>break between each set of four\u00a0rak\u2019ahs<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>of the Tar\u0101w\u012bh<\/em>\u00a0prayer, the Muslims of different regions, especially in Makkah and Mad\u012bnah, observed different acts of worship.\u00a0 The Muslims in Makkah used to make\u00a0taw\u0101f<\/em>\u00a0of the Ka\u2019bah during each\u00a0tarw\u012bhah<\/em>, whereas those in Mad\u012bnah, unable to make\u00a0taw\u0101f<\/em>, would pray an additional four\u00a0rak\u2019ahs<\/em>\u00a0instead.<\/p>\n

However, during the\u00a0tarw\u012bhah <\/em>(rest)<\/em>, a person may recite the Qur\u2019\u0101n,\u00a0tasb\u012bh<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(Subh\u0101n All\u0101h<\/em>),\u00a0tahm\u012bd<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(Alhamdulill\u0101h<\/em>),\u00a0tahl\u012bl<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(L\u0101 il\u0101ha illall\u0101h<\/em>), pray\u00a0naw\u0101fil<\/em>\u00a0individually, send\u00a0dur\u016bd <\/em>(blessings) on the Prophet\u00a0\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645<\/strong>, or simply remain silent.\u00a0 This is mentioned by the fuqah\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018ulam\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>in their books, including\u00a0al-Mabs\u016bt<\/em>,[1]\u00a0al-Muh\u012bt al-Burh\u0101n\u012b<\/em>,[2]\u00a0Bad\u0101\u2019i\u2019 al-<\/em>\u1e62<\/em>an<\/em>\u0101\u2019<\/em>i<\/em>\u2019<\/em>,[3]Mukht\u0101r\u0101t al-Naw\u0101zil<\/em>,[4]\u00a0al-Fat\u0101w\u0101 al-T\u0101t\u0101rkh\u0101niyyah<\/em>,[5]\u00a0Ghunyat al-Mutamall\u012b<\/em>,[6]\u00a0Nih\u0101yat al-Mur\u0101d<\/em>,[7]Fath B\u0101b al-\u2018In\u0101yah<\/em>,[8]\u00a0Majma\u2019 al-Anhur<\/em>,[9]\u00a0Imd\u0101d al-Ahk\u0101m<\/em>,[10] and\u00a0Fat\u0101w\u0101 Rah\u012bmiyyah<\/em>.[11]<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, none of the abovementioned books mention any\u00a0masn\u016bn<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0mustahabb du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0for the tarw\u012bhah <\/em>(rest)<\/em>, including the\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>commonly read by Muslims in several Masjids, many of which advertise the du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0on large printed banners.\u00a0 This\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>, commonly known as the \u201cTar\u0101w\u012bh Du\u2018\u0101\u2019,\u201d is as follows:<\/p>\n

Exalted is the Possessor of the hidden and the manifest dominion.\u00a0 Exalted is the Possessor of Might, Greatness, Reverence, Power, Pride, and Majesty.\u00a0 Exalted is the Master, the Living, the one who neither sleeps nor dies.\u00a0 All-perfect, All-holy, Our Lord, and the Lord of the angels and the souls.\u00a0 O All\u0101h, grant us refuge from the Hellfire.\u00a0 O Granter of refuge, O Granter of refuge, O Granter of refuge.<\/em><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, a thorough search of the books of\u00a0ah\u0101d\u012bth, taf\u0101s\u012br<\/em>,\u00a0fiqh,<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>etc. did not reveal a single mention of this\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0anywhere.<\/p>\n

Apparently, the basis for any specific\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>for the\u00a0tarw\u012bhah<\/em>\u00a0stems from Im\u0101m Ibn \u2018\u0100bid\u012bn mentioning in Radd al-Muht\u0101r\u00a0<\/em>[13] that one should recite the following\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>three times:<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, even Im\u0101m Ibn \u2018\u0100bid\u012bn did not quote the (exact) words of the (famous) \u201cTar\u0101w\u012bh Du\u2018\u0101\u2019\u201d (which is printed on banners). \u00a0In\u00a0\u1e6c<\/em>aw<\/em>\u0101<\/em>li<\/em>\u2019<\/em> al-Anw<\/em>\u0101<\/em>r,<\/em>[12]\u00a0Im\u0101m \u2018\u0100bid al-Sindh\u012b has also narrated the same words as Im\u0101m Ibn \u2018\u0100bid\u012bn. Neither have claimed that the\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0they quote is\u00a0sunnah<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0mustahabb.<\/em><\/p>\n

Furthermore, both Im\u0101m Ibn \u2018\u0100bid\u012bn and Im\u0101m \u2018\u0100bid al-Sindh\u012b quote the\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0from Im\u0101m Quhust\u0101n\u012b.\u00a0 Im\u0101m Ibn \u2018\u0100bid\u012bn, when quoting Im\u0101m Quhust\u0101n\u012b, states that the\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0is mentioned in\u00a0Manhaj al-\u2018Ib\u0101d<\/em>.\u00a0 On the other hand, Im\u0101m \u2018\u0100bid al-Sindh\u012b quotes Im\u0101m Quhust\u0101n\u012b mentioning\u00a0Maf\u0101t\u012bh al-\u2018Ib\u0101d<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>as the source of the\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 In\u00a0J\u0101mi\u2019 al-Rum\u016bz<\/em>,[13] Im\u0101m Quhust\u0101n\u012b mentions the source of the\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>\u00a0as\u00a0Man\u0101hij al-\u2019\u012ab\u0101d<\/em>.\u00a0 Regardless of whether the correct name of the book is\u00a0Manhaj al-\u2018Ib\u0101d, Man\u0101hij al-\u2018Ib\u0101d,<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Maf\u0101t\u012bh al-\u2018Ib\u0101d,<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>it is not a reliable book<\/strong> in establishing any preference for the recitation of this\u00a0du\u2018\u0101\u2019<\/em>, let alone in each\u00a0tarw\u012bhah,<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>nor does Im\u0101m Quhust\u0101n\u012b, from whom others narrate, attach any special reward to it.<\/p>\n

Therefore, it is incorrect to regard the \u201cTar\u0101w\u012bh Du\u2018\u0101\u201d as\u00a0sunnah<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0mustahab.<\/em><\/p>\n

[Shaikh\u00a0Abrar Mirza<\/a>]<\/p>\n

Hazrat Maulana Marghoob Ahmed Lajpoori (\u062d\u0641\u0638\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) writes:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn these times people have exceed the boundaries concerning the \u201cTar\u0101w\u012bh Du\u2018\u0101\u2019,\u201d.\u00a0Especially in Britain (and Trinidad), in many masaajid<\/em> the \u201cTar\u0101w\u012bh Du\u2018\u0101\u2019,\u201d is printed on huge posters and hanged up on the wall of the Qiblah<\/em>. However, the Fuqaha <\/em>have stated that if people start to grant a mustahab<\/em> act the status of a wajib<\/em> act, then it must be abandoned<\/strong>. Here, the situation\u00a0is that, forget the layman, even the ulama are devoted\u00a0in reciting this Tasbih<\/em>. It is also becoming a custom to\u00a0recite it audibly and people are taking pleasure in it.<\/p>\n

Firstly, it is very difficult to prove this Tasbih<\/em> by hadith<\/em>. Yes Allamah Shami did mention this Tasbih<\/em> and then\u00a0it found its way\u00a0in our books of Fiqh<\/em> and Fatwa<\/em>. However, it is more rewarding to recite the duas<\/em>\u00a0and dhikrs<\/em>\u00a0that are narrated\u00a0in the books of Hadith<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This is why, Hazrat Maulana Rashid Ahmed Gangohi’s (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647) habit was to recite \u0633\u0628\u062d\u0627\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0648 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0645\u062f \u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0648\u0644\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0627\u0643\u0628\u0631 instead.<\/p>\n

The late grand mufti<\/em> of India, Hazrat Mufti Azizur Rahman has stated: “This humble one says that there are many virtues mentioned of the words\u00a0\u0633\u0628\u062d\u0627\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0648 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0645\u062f \u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0648\u0644\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0627\u0643\u0628\u0631 in numerous authentic hadiths<\/em>. Therefore to repeat these kalimaat<\/em> (words) would be more virtuous. This was the habit and choice of Hazrat Muhaddith Faqeeh Gangohi (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647).” [Fatawa Darul Uloom Deoband Vol.4 Pg.186 Question #1761)<\/p>\n

Someone asked Hakimul Ummah Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi\u00a0(\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647) what he recites in the tarwihah<\/em> (the resting between the 4 rakats of Tarawih). He replied: “There is no dhikr that is stipulated in Shari’ah<\/em>. As for me, I recite Durood Shareef<\/em> (Salutations on the Messenger) 25 times.” (Tahfa-e-Ramadhan Pg.111)\u201d<\/p>\n

Further more in many of the posters there is a huge typographical error\u00a0that changes the meaning of the dua<\/em> drastically. Instead of\u00a0\u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0638\u064e\u0645\u064e\u0629\u0650 (wal Aza<\/strong>mati<\/em>) with a fatha<\/em> on the\u00a0\u0638\u064e\u00a0-which means: “Possessor of Greatness”- <\/em>the posters have\u00a0\u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0638\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0629\u0650 (wal Azmati<\/em>) with a sukoon on the \u0638\u0652 -which, Allah forbid, means\u00a0“Possessor of Bones”. <\/em>This is\u00a0quite a vulgar diacritical gaffe which is totally\u00a0impermissible to recite.<\/p>\n

In conclusion,\u00a0one should engage\u00a0in\u00a0tasb\u012bh, tahm\u012bd, dur\u016bd, <\/em>etc. or simply remain silent.<\/p>\n

And Allah Ta’aala knows best.<\/p>\n
