{"id":3783,"date":"2015-04-27T12:08:00","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T16:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.com\/?p=3783"},"modified":"2015-04-27T12:08:00","modified_gmt":"2015-04-27T16:08:00","slug":"salah-shoes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.com\/?p=3783","title":{"rendered":"Salah in Shoes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Question:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Is it permissible or desirable to perform Salah in shoes?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Please answer in details with evidences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Answer:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">\u0628\u0633\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u062d\u064a\u0645<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">\u062d\u0627\u0645\u062f\u0627 \u0648\u0645\u0635\u0644\u064a\u0627 \u0648\u0645\u0633\u0644\u0645\u0627<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Messenger of Allah (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) has performed <em>Salah<\/em> in sandals as well as barefooted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ab\u00fc Maslama Sa&#8217;id bin Yazid Al-Azdi said: I asked Anas bin M\u00e3lik (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) whether the Prophet (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) had ever offered <em>Salah <\/em>(prayer) with his sandals on. He replied, &#8220;Yes.&#8221;<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8216;Amr bin Shu&#8217;aib reported from his father, from his grandfather, that he said: &#8220;I saw the Messenger of Allah (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) pray barefooted, and (also saw him praying) while wearing sandals.&#8221;<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is permissible to perform <em>Salah<\/em> in shoes on the condition that:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>There is no impurity on any one of them which prevents <em>Salah<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>One is able to complete his <em>Sajdah <\/em>i.e. he performs <em>Sajdah<\/em> with his toes pressing on the floor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>This would be achieved if ones toes are touching the inner front of the shoes (of this era) and there is no space in between.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These conditions are derived from the following <em>hadiths<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Once the sandals of the Messenger (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) had some filth on them, Jibraeel informed him about it, so he removed them.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen one of you comes to the <em>Masjid, <\/em>then let him see (his sandals); if he sees any uncleanliness \u2013 or impurity &#8211; on them, let him wipe it off and pray in them.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"2\">\n<li>It was narrated from Ibn &#8216;Abb\u00e2s (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) that the Messenger of Allah (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) said: \u201cI have been commanded to prostrate on seven bones: The forehead\u201d &#8211; and he pointed to his nose \u2013 \u201cthe hands, the feet and the ends of the feet (toes), and not to tuck up my garment or hair.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Imam Bukhari has also indicated to this second condition by bringing the chapter entitled, \u201cIf someone does not prostrate properly\u201d after the chapters of permissibility of <em>Salah<\/em> in sandals and leather socks as explained by Imam Anwar Shah Kashmiri, his student Allamah Merathi and Hazrat Shaikh (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647)\u00a0in their respective commentaries of \u2018Sahihul Bukhari\u2019.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Allamah Khattabi,<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a> Mulla Ali Qari<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a> and Allamah Kawthari<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a>\u00a0(\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) also pointed out these conditions. Shaikh Muhammad Awwamah (\u062d\u0641\u0638\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) also indicated to them in his footnote on \u2018Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaibah\u2019.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to majority of A<em>hnaaf, Malikiyah<\/em> and <em>Shawaafe\u2019<\/em> performing Salah in sandals is simply permissible (with the above conditions) and it isn\u2019t <em>mustahab<\/em> (encouraged). Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Lailaa (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) said: \u201cWhoever wishes to perform Salah in his sandals then do so; and whoever wishes to remove them then do so.<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a> Allamah Mahmmod As-Subki Al-Maliki said that this <em>hadith<\/em> clearly indicates that performing <em>Salah<\/em> in sandals is simply permissible and it is not a virtuous act because the Messenger (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) gave us a choice.<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\">[12]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the time of the Rasool (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) the floor of the <em>masjid<\/em> had pebbles and it didn\u2019t have such a roof that could prevent the heat of the sun. The clothing and shoes of the Companions (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0645) were also not filthy because they were very clean as there are many <em>Ahadith<\/em> which encourage cleanliness and the Sahabah used to practice wholeheartedly on the dictates of the <em>Sunnah<\/em>. Also, the sandals they used did not prevent the toes from feeling the firmness of the ground nor from bending towards <em>Qiblah<\/em>, which is a <em>Sunnah<\/em> of <em>Sajdah<\/em> and the blessed habit of Ras\u00fblull\u00e2h (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645).<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\">[13]<\/a> Abu Humaid al-Saa\u2019idi (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) said when describing the Salah of Ras\u00fblull\u00e2h (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645): \u201cIn prostrations, he placed both his hands on the ground with the forearms away from the ground, and turned his toes towards the Qiblah.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\">[14]<\/a> These are some of the reasons why the Rasool (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) performed <em>Salah<\/em> in sandals. Another reason was to oppose the Jews.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When Musa (\u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645) went up on the Mount Sinai, Allah commanded: \u201cRemove your shoes, you are in the sacred valley of <em>Tuwa<\/em>.\u201d {Surah Taha:12} This was an issue of <em>adab<\/em> and etiquettes. Imam Kashmiri explains that the Jews started to believe that <em>Salah <\/em>is invalid with sandals, so <em>Shariah<\/em> rectified this false notion like it does in many such instances.<a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\">[15]<\/a> For this purpose the Messenger <em>of <\/em>Allah (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) said: &#8220;Be different from the Jews, for they do not pray in their sandals or their leather socks.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\">[16]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So this permissible act would have been <em>Mustahab<\/em> in that era when the Jews were performing their prayers barefooted and a Muslim performed <em>Salah<\/em> with the intention of contradicting them.<a href=\"#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\">[17]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, since the Jews and the Christians of today perform their prayers in shoes, performing <em>Salah<\/em> barefooted would be more rewarding.<a href=\"#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\">[18]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another point is that the <em>masaajid<\/em> nowadays are carpeted and performing <em>Salah<\/em> in shoes would surely soil them. We have been taught to keep the <em>masaajid<\/em> clean. Aishah (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0627) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) commanded <em>masaajid<\/em> be built in the villages and that they be kept clean and fragrant.<a href=\"#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\">[19]<\/a> This is why the later <em>Fuqahaa <\/em>have said to enter the <em>masjid<\/em> with shoes is bad etiquette and even <em>makrooh<\/em> (reprehensible). Doing so will lead to <em>fitnah<\/em> (dissention) in these times.<a href=\"#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\">[20]<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some Contemporary scholars have passed a blanket ruling of impermissibility of <em>Salah <\/em>in the shoes of today.<a href=\"#_ftn21\" name=\"_ftnref21\">[21]<\/a> For sure, most of the shoes will prevent one from bending their toes towards <em>Qiblah<\/em>. This is why it is best to refrain from performing <em>Salah<\/em> in these shoes.
