{"id":2393,"date":"2014-04-19T21:59:46","date_gmt":"2014-04-20T01:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.com\/?p=2393"},"modified":"2014-04-19T21:59:46","modified_gmt":"2014-04-20T01:59:46","slug":"kufa-hub-hadith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.com\/?p=2393","title":{"rendered":"Kufa, Iraq: A Hub for Hadith Knowledge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A\u00a0sign of ignorance of these so called shaiks concerning hadith and its history is their\u00a0claim that, Imam Abu Hanifah (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0did not know much hadith since\u00a0Kufa was very far from Madinah, the city of revelation and hadith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The following will show that this claim of theirs is the farthest thing from the truth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Kufa<\/strong> was a city founded by the order of the greatest faqeeh this ummah ever produced. It was no other than Umar ibn Khattab (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0who ordered Abu Musa al-Ash&#8217;ari (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0to build Kufa, which he did in the year 18 AH. [Mu&#8217;jamul Buldaan 4\/491]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The great Imam of Jarh and Ta&#8217;deel, Hafiz Abul Hasan\u00a0E&#8217;jli said in his &#8220;Thiqaat&#8221; [2\/448]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;<strong>1500<\/strong> Sahabah (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0645) resided in Kufa.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The great tabee&#8217;, muhaddith and jurist, Ibrahim ibn Yazeed an-Nakhae&#8217; in explaining the ranks of these Sahabah said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;<strong>300<\/strong> Sahabah from those who took the pledge of allegiance\u00a0under the tree, <strong>80<\/strong> Sahabah from the battle of Badr stayed\u00a0in <strong>Kufa\u00a0<\/strong>(\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0645).&#8221; [Tabaqaat Ibn Sa&#8217;ad 8\/132]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Luminaries like: Ali ibn Abi Talib, Sa&#8217;d ibn Abi Waqqaas, Saeed ibn Zaid, Abdullah ibn Masood, Ammar ibn Yaasir, Khabbab ibn Arat, Huzaifah ibn Yaman, Abu Musa al-Asha&#8217;ri, Salman al-Farsi, Baraa ibn A&#8217;azib, Mughirah ibn Shu&#8217;bah and others. May Allah be pleased with them. [ibid 8\/134-143]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If anyone of these fountains of hadith knowledge was to reside in any of the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #222222;\">metropolitan<\/span>\u00a0cities we have around the world it\u00a0would be filled with ilm, hadith and amal. They were the true flag bearers of the Sunnah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second Kalifah,\u00a0Umar ibn Khattab (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0remarked concerning <strong>Kufa<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;It is the head of Islam and its treasure. It is the sword of Allah and His spear which He places as He wishes. By Allah, Allah\u00a0will use its people as a means of help for the East and West of the World in the same manner as He has used Hijaz.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0[ibid 8\/128-129]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was the same\u00a0Umar ibn Khattab (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0who had sent <strong>Abdullal ibn Masood<\/strong> and <strong>Ammar<\/strong> ibn Yasir (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0645\u0627)\u00a0to Kufa as its teacher and leader. He said, &#8220;They are from the noble and superior sahabah, from the companions of Badr. Learn from them and follow them. I am giving you all preference of Ibn Masood over myself.&#8221; [ibid 8\/130]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This last statement of Umar (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) shows that even he use to refer to<strong> Ibn Masood<\/strong> (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0in matters of ilm, hadith and fiqh. [Fiqh Ahlil Iraq p. 29] And why not? <strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong> was the one in charge of the Messenger&#8217;s <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)\u00a0<\/span>siwak and pilow. [Bukhari # 6278] The following hadith will show the frequency in which the Messenger\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)<\/span> used the miswak. From it we can derive the regular interaction <strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong> had with him. The Messenger\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)<\/span> said: &#8220;Jibraeel never came to me but ordered me to use the siwak. Surely\u00a0I feared of scrubbing out the front of my mouth (due to brushing so often).&#8221; [Ahmed 5\/263, Ibn Majah # 289] Due to his young age he used to enter the house of the Messenger\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645) often,<\/span>\u00a0so much so that some companions who had recently arrived in Madinah thought he was a family member of the Rasool\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)<\/span>. [Bukhari # 3763, Muslim # 2460] Therefore a person with such close and regular contact with the greatest teacher on earth will surely acquire an ocean of ilm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The following ahadith and aathaar will shed light on the deep and extensive knowledge that <strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong> (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647) was endowed with\u00a0in all the sciences of Islam including Qirat, Tafsir, Hadith and Fiqh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Messenger <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)<\/span>\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;\u0097Take the Quran from four: <strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong>, Saalim, Ubai ibn Ka\u2019ab, and Muaz ibn Jabal.&#8221; [Bukhari #3760 and Muslim #2464]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Messenger <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)<\/span>\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;\u0097I do not know how long I have with you all, so follow those after me.&#8221; He indicated towards Abu Bakr and Umar. &#8220;And seek guidance in the actions of Ammar, <strong>And believe every hadith Ibn Masood teaches you<\/strong>.&#8221; [Tirmithi #3799] In another narration it is stated: &#8220;And follow the ways of <strong>Ammar<\/strong> and take guidance in the advice of\u00a0<strong>Ibn Umm Abd<\/strong>.&#8221; [Ahmed 5\/399]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Messenger <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)<\/span>\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I am happy with whatever <strong>Ibn Umm Abd <\/strong>(Ibn Masood) is pleased with for the ummah.&#8221; [Hakim in Mustadrak]<\/p>\n<p>Huzaifah ibnul Yamaan (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0the secret bearer of the Messenger <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)<\/span>\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;\u0097The closest person to the Rasool <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)<\/span>\u00a0in characteristics, methods\u00a0 and ways was Ibn Umm Abd (<strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong>)&#8221; [Bukhari #6097] In other words, he was an embodiment of the Sunnah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Umar (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0said on more than one\u00a0occasion concerning <strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong>\u00a0(\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647), &#8220;A vessel filled with ilm and fiqh.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ali (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0said concerning <strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong>\u00a0(\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;He has recited the Quran, made its halal halal and its haram haram. He is a faqeeh in the Deen and a scholar of the Sunnah.&#8221; [Hakim in Mustadrak, Mukhtasar Tareekh Ibn Asaakir 14\/61]<\/p>\n<p>\u0097At the time of his death Muaz ibn Jabal, the Sahabi who knew halal and haram the best, advised:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Take ilm (knowledge) from four: Abu Dardaa, Salman, <strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong> and Abdullah ibn Salaam.&#8221; [Timithi #3804]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u0097Masrooq, the adopted child of Aishah (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0627), and student of many giant Sahabah the likes of Umar, Ali, Ibn Masood, Muaz\u00a0and others (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0645),\u00a0said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;\u0097I studied and surveyed the knowledge of the Sahabah, and I realized that\u00a0 it winds up at\u00a0six of them: Umar, <strong>Ali<\/strong>, <strong>Ibn Mas\u2019ood<\/strong>, Muaz, Abu Dardaa and Zaid ibn Thabit. Then I surveyed the six and concluded that it ends up with <strong>Ali and Ibn Masood<\/strong>.&#8221; \u00a0[Mukhtasar Tareekh Ibn Asaakir 14\/62]<\/p>\n<p>Masrooq (\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) also said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I have sat with many companions of the Messenger <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)\u00a0<\/span>and found them to be vessels of water (ilm). Some would quenched the thirst of one person, some of two people and others the thirst of ten. There were those who would quenched the thirst of the whole world if they would come to them. <strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong> was from this last group.&#8221; [ibid]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong> resided and illuminated <strong>Kufa<\/strong> for the most part of the khilafah of Umar and Uthman\u00a0(\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0645). [Zahabi in Mizanul E&#8217;tidal 1\/270]<\/p>\n<p>When Ali (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0migrated to<strong> Kufa<\/strong> and saw its many jurist, he remarked:<br \/>\n&#8220;May Allah have mercy on <strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong>. He has filled this city\u00a0with ilm.&#8221;\u00a0[Tabaqat ibn Sa&#8217;d 6\/76]<br \/>\nHe also said:<br \/>\n&#8220;The students of <strong>Ibn Masood<\/strong> are the lights of this city\u00a0(<strong>Kufa<\/strong>).&#8221; [Tabaqat ibn Sa&#8217;d 8\/132]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then <strong>Ali\u00a0<\/strong>(\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647), the cousin and son-in-law of the Messenger <span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645)<\/span>, the fourth rightly guided khalifah and second vessel of knowledge of all the Sahabah, migrated to <strong>Kufa<\/strong> and made it the capital of the Islamic Empire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Obviously, a great scholar the caliber of\u00a0<strong>Ali<\/strong> (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0would impart\u00a0his extensive knowledge of the Quran and Sunnah to the people of<strong> Kufa<\/strong>. Ibn Taimiyah expresses this fact in the following words:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The knowledge of <strong>Ali<\/strong> and his fiqh (deep understanding of the Quran and Sunnah) manifested in <strong>Kufa<\/strong> while he was residing there at the time of his khilafah.&#8221; [Mihajus Sunnah by Ibn Taimiyah 7\/510]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Take a deep breath and try to imagine the beacon of ilm of the Quran and Sunnah that <strong>Kufa<\/strong> became in the lives of the Sahabah and their successors. Subahaanallah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These so called shaikhs that are cutting the ummah off from the 4 great Imam of the Quran and Sunnah and forcing people into blindly following their interpretations of the Quran and Sunnah say that Abu Hanifah (\u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647)\u00a0did not know hadith because its knowledge reached Kufa after the six scholars of hadith. Allah\u00a0forbid. This is nothing but one of their many lies and deceptions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The reality is the total opposite. The six scholars of Hadith became scholars of hadith by studying hadith in <strong>Kufa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let us simply take the word of the leader of hadith scholars, Imam <strong>Bukhari<\/strong>\u00a0(\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647\u00a0\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647). He says concerning the cities where he studied hadith:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I entered Shaam, Misr and Jazeera twice. I entered Basrah four times. I stayed in Hijaaz for six years. But I cannot count how many times I entered <strong>Kufa<\/strong> and Baghdad with the muhadditheen.&#8221; [Hadyus Saari Muqaddimah Fathil Baari by Hafiz Ibn Hajr Asqalani p. 479]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Allamah Zahabi after mentioning how knowledge came to <strong>Kufa<\/strong> from the Sahabah and spread, said, &#8220;Ilm remained available in Kufa in abundance\u00a0until the time of Ibn Uqdah.&#8221; [Imam Ibn Majah aur Ilm Hadith by Muhaddith Abdur Rasheed Nu&#8217;mani p. 44]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hafiz Ibn Uqdah died in 332 AH. Ibn Masood died in 32 AH. <strong>Imam Abu Hanifah<\/strong> lived from 80 AH (or 61 AH) until 150 AH. [Khairatul Hisaan by Ibn Hajr Makki Haitami p. 39 &amp; 126]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the greatest Tabee&#8217;, Muhammad\u00a0ibn Sireen, \u00a0who died in 110 AH said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I came to Kufa from Jamaajim and saw <strong>4000<\/strong> students studying hadith.&#8221; [Muhaddith Faasil # 428, Tahzeebul Kamal\u00a025\/353]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">May Allah connect us to the Salaf and may He help us to follow in their footsteps. May He protect us from arrogance and a\u00a0sense of superiority over them.
