{"id":11085,"date":"2019-04-16T15:47:01","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T19:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.com\/?p=6844"},"modified":"2019-04-16T15:47:01","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T19:47:01","slug":"is-wearing-a-black-jilbab-abayah-and-overgarment-a-saudi-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiqhulislam.com\/?p=11085","title":{"rendered":"Is Wearing a Black Jilb\u0101b, Ab\u0101yah and Overgarment a Saudi Culture?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u0628\u0633\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u062d\u064a\u0645<\/p>\n<p>One of the tools being used by the enemies of Islam to send the masses astray and naively being adopted by some Muslims is dismissing many established laws of <em>Shariah<\/em> and the <em>Sunan<\/em> of the <em>Ras\u016bl<\/em> \ufdfa and <em>\u1e62<\/em><em>a<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>\u0101bah<\/em>, male and female \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0645, as being simply \u2018culture\u2019. One such false claim is that <strong>black<\/strong> <em>ab\u0101yahs<\/em>\/<em>jilb\u0101bs or <\/em>cloaks\/overgarments worn by women is a Saudi culture and has no basis in <em>Shar\u012b<sup>c<\/sup>ah<\/em>. Even though there is no specific colour which <strong>must<\/strong> be adopted when wearing the overgarments, other than the general rules of not being inciting of <em>fitnah<\/em> or attractive and not being a garment of ostentation etc.,<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> here it will be proven that <strong>black<\/strong> <em>abay\u0101hs<\/em>\/<em>jilb\u0101bs or <\/em>cloaks\/overgarments were worn by the <em>\u1e62<\/em><em>a<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>\u0101biy\u0101t<\/em> in the Messenger\u2019s \ufdfa era and that this is, in fact, part of the <em>Shar\u012b<sup>c<\/sup>ah<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Umm Mu\u2019<\/em><em>min<\/em><em>\u012bn,<\/em> Umm Salamah \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0627 said, \u201cWhen the verse, \u2018And they should draw their <em>jilb\u0101b<\/em> (cloaks) over themselves,\u2019 was revealed, the women of the <em>An<\/em><em>\u1e63<\/em><em>\u0101r<\/em> went out as if there were <strong>crows<\/strong> on their heads from <em>sak\u012bnah<\/em>, and they were wearing <strong>black<\/strong> overgarments (<em>akyisah<\/em>).\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collected by Abdur Razz\u0101q in his <em>Tafs\u012br<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><strong>[2]<\/strong><\/a> <\/em>and Ab\u016b Daw\u016bd \u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 in his <em>Sunan<\/em>.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The <em>mu<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>addith<\/em>, Shaikh Shu<sup>c<\/sup>aib Arn\u0101w\u016bt \u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 said, \u201cIts chain is strong.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All the commentators of this <em>\u1e25<\/em><em>ad\u012bth<\/em> explain that their garments were likened to crows due to their <strong>black<\/strong> colour.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a> The expert <em>\u1e25<\/em><em>ad<\/em><em>\u012b<\/em><em>th<\/em> lexicographer, <em>All<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>mah<\/em> Ibn Qutaibah (d. 276 AH) \u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 said, \u201cWhat is meant by \u2018there were <strong>crows<\/strong> on their heads\u2019 is that the overgarments (<em>mur\u016bt<\/em>) were from <strong>black<\/strong> hairs (of camel or sheep) so the parts which were on their heads were like crows (in blackness).\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> In other words, the <em>an<\/em><em>\u1e63<\/em><em>\u0101riyah<\/em> women made their <em>khim\u0101rs <\/em>(head and chest coverings) from the overgarments they already possessed. Since these overgarments were already <strong>black<\/strong>\u00a0when they placed the <em>khim\u0101rs<\/em>, which were made from them, on their heads it looked like <strong>black<\/strong> <strong>crows<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In his magnificent commentary on <em>Sunan<\/em> Ab\u012b Daw\u016bd, <strong>the great <em>muhaddith<\/em> and <em>faq\u012bh<\/em>, Ibn Rasl\u0101n<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">(d. 844 AH)<\/span> \u0631\u062d\u0645\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647, who died centuries before Saudi Arabia was even conceptualized, said, \u201cThe women of the <em>An<\/em><em>\u1e63<\/em><em>\u0101r<\/em> exited while the <em>jilb\u0101bs<\/em> (overgarments) were drawn all over them as though on their heads were crows (<em>ghirb\u0101n<\/em>). The <strong>black<\/strong> <em>khim\u0101rs<\/em> (head and chest coverings) were likened to <strong>crows<\/strong> because of the <strong>black<\/strong> cloaks which they would use as <em>jilb\u0101bs<\/em> to cover themselves. The poet said, \u2018Clothed with a <em>jilb\u0101b<\/em> of the darkness of night.\u2019<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a> <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This <em>\u1e25<\/em><em>ad\u012bth<\/em> proves that it is from <em>Shar\u012b<sup>c<\/sup>ah<\/em> for women to use <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">black<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> overgarments (<em>mal\u0101<\/em><em>\u1e25<\/em><em>if<\/em>) to cover themselves, especially at night, because it does a better job concealing them, as opposed to white (ones).<\/span><\/strong>\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In her narration of this incident, <em>Umm Mu\u2019<\/em><em>min<\/em><em>\u012bn<\/em> Aishah \u0631\u0636\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0646\u0647\u0627 applauded the <em>An<\/em><em>\u1e63<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>riyah<\/em> women on this action by saying, \u201cIndeed there is virtue in the Quraishi women, however, I did not see anyone more virtuous than the women of the <em>An<\/em><em>\u1e63<\/em><em>\u0101r<\/em> and none with a stronger belief in the Book of Allah nor faith in the revelation.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a> She went on to say that as soon as the above verse was revealed and their menfolk came home and recited it to their wives, daughters and sisters, \u201cEvery <em>An<\/em><em>\u1e63<\/em><em>\u0101riyah<\/em> woman immediately got up and made the head and chest coverings from their (black) overgarments (of sheep or camel\u2019s) hair out of belief and faith in what Allah revealed in His Book. Then they came out in the morning to perform the <em>Fajr<\/em> prayer behind the Messenger of Allah \ufdfa with the head and chest coverings as if there were <strong>crows<\/strong> on their heads.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>May Allah protect us from the onslaught of misinformation about our <em>Shar\u012b<sup>c<\/sup>ah<\/em> which is being promoted externally as well as from within. [<em>Sharh<\/em> \u02bfA\u012byn\u012b on <em>Sunan<\/em> Ab\u012b D\u0101w\u016bd Vol.3 Pg.54] <em>\u02bfAll\u0101mah<\/em> \u0100l\u016bs\u012b said, \u201cOne of those things which would be attached to the adornment (<em>z\u012bnah<\/em>) which is prohibited (on women) to expose is what most luxurious women of our times wear on top of their clothing and conceal themselves with it when they leave their homes, and that is a covering made from silk which has many colours, and in it are golden and silver embroidery which dazzles the eyes. I also consider their husband and guardian\u2019s allowance of them to emerge in this manner and walk among strange men to be due to a lack of <em>ghairah<\/em>.
